Gen. Colin Powell's endorsement of Barack Obama this morning -- "a seal of approval [by] the most important military figure of the age," a Meet the Press commentator stated -- will almost certainly increase Obama's poll ratings with conservative over-55s and fortify the general movement in Obama's direction.
MSNBC's Joe Scarborugh said this morning that the race is going to tighten up by the end. "We're not a 60-40 nation," he said. "We're a 51-49 nation."

Well said, Mr. Powell. Unfortunately, many Americans are so stubborn to face the facts, and wit McCain on the offensive it's disheartening to know that McCain might still win. MANY AMERICANS ARE MISINFORMED, or worse, STUPID ENOUGH to not see the bigger picture. McCain is NOT THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THE JOB.
Once McCain gets elected, it's going to be the lowest point in American history. Because, it shows that after everything that has happened in the last decade, many Americans have not learned.

Wait, so just cuz Powell endorses Obama we're automatically supposed to forgive and forget that whole lying before congress about WMDs thing? Wasn't Powell's false testimony one of the main reasons Bush got the green light to start the war?
(P.S. I'm voting for Obama)

That's right, Ju-osh. Powell's mistake on Iraq is a mistake we're still making. Time to forgive, maybe, when the mistake is done and over with, and the results corrected. But how do you bring back the wrongfully dead, heal the tortured, and restore everything to sanity. Probably you don't. Powell helped break it, and now (by his own logic) he owns it.
Better to endorse Obama than the alternative, of course, and that is an apparent sign of sanity. But imagine if he had vigorously and publicly opposed the war before it began. As it is, he's in a deep, deep hole and only just beginning, possibly, to crawl his way out of it.

If you read user comments on right wing blogs and right wing newspapers, you'll notice that there are a lot of people saying the same thing over and over again: "I'm not racist, I would vote for Colin Powell or Condi Rice in a second!" I wonder what those people are telling themselves this morning.
And what are we to make of this?

I don't see that as even a remote possibility. General Powell is 71 now. He'll be 75 during the next election, and 79 next time there won't be an incumbent in the race. As big of deal as McCain's age has been right now, anything over 75 would seem to rule anyone out.
Powell's shot was 12 years ago, but his wife talked him out of running.
Even if he were to run four or eight years from now, his opponent would play the WMD press conference ad nauseam, and Powell's judgement would be called into question.

That letter by Rich to Friedkin was like something out of the 1950s. It seems that if Mccain and Palin are elected we'll get a lovely return to the McCarthy era when we persecuted "Unamerican" citizens (possibly, the sort that Palin keeps mentioning at her campaign rallies).

OK, now I've watched the Powell video from Meet the Press. I highly recommend it. Brilliant. I'll never be able to speak that well in this life. I have to give him big points for this. Poor guy had the bad luck to get stuck in the middle of the demonic Bush administration.

As I wrote before, Powell is our Sarah Palin.
Sure, we know he is still the guy who lied about the Mai Lai Massacre and WMD's, but he is still going to shore up support where we are weak: undecideds.
He might also cause a few more moderate Republicans to jump from the sinking USS McCain in the next week. Now that the writing is on the wall, a good way to put yourself out there in the media is to endorse Obama.

Deathtoungue, not everyone shares your negative view of Powell, and to compare him in any way to Palin is an insult.
I thought his endorsement was clearly articulated, compelling and credible.
After the interview he talked to some other reporters outside and attacked McCain's campaign more bluntly. Just awesome stuff here: http://www.politico.com/blogs/jonathanmartin/1008/After_Meet_Powell_carries_on_his_indictment_of_McCainGOP.html
