Oh man...don't even need to listen to the clip - "Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb", one my favorites. I can't remember what the letters stand for, but it was the apparatus on the aircraft through which the crew were given codes by their commanders. They'd get a three-letter, three-digit code, and they'd look said code up in their code book to see what it meant. I believe "CRM-114" was the dreaded code for "Plan Attack R", which was the code telling them to go ahead and attack their primary target in Russia. Or, was it the code they were supposed to switch to to prevent the enemy from issuing fake codes? My memory fails. I'll guess Major Kong was the first to mention it, but again, I can't recall exactly.

Of course the Strangelove code immediately comes to mind, but why the line in the sand, Jeff? Are you trying to alienate anyone who hasn't pointlessly memorized some six character sequence? I just don't get these posts. They could be fun trivia games, but the wording screams "If you don't know what this is from, than you don't really appreciate film on the level that I do". Oh well. Maybe you mean to convey a teasing tone, but that's hard to pick up on the internets.
I loved Strangelove, but I had to look this up (and learned just how ubiquitous this reference has become since its origin).
Cut me some slack, man. I already know I'm not the top cinephile, and I'm going senile.
Of course, now that I've looked it up and this particular bit of knowledge has been scrutinized so, I probably won't forget again, in which case I am proud to announce to all of you that as of today - thanks to my knowledge of CRM-114 - I am now a true film person.
I love how in almost every post I can see you looking at my with unease just waiting for me to step my boots onto your lawn so you can yell "get off!" It's really rather amusing.
I did know this one as soon as the clip began. Just the first few words and the white noise was enough.
Of course, in my partial defense, I didn't actually click on the mp3 to listen to it. I was only basing my lack of knowledge on the letters and numbers themselves, so I might have gotten it with the dialogue.
Didn't Kubrick reuse this the way Lucas always slips 1138 in there?
I feel like Alex takes "Serum 114" in A Clockwork Orange and also suspect there was some equipment on the Odyssey which was numbered CRM114 in 2001...?

but i guess the 'first mention' part of the question would be the 1958 peter george novel 'red alert' on which kubrick based his film......

I knew it was from Strangelove and it was an apparatus on the bomber plane, but I couldn't remember its specific function.
