Snap Judgment

I won't be saying anything about Doubt until the end of next week or thereabouts, but the big acting revelation for me and several others I spoke to at last night's AFI Fest screening is the supporting performance by Viola Davis, who plays the mother of one of the students in an urban Catholic school. She absolutely kills in one very intense scene with costar Meryl Streep, and I can't even find an online photo of her performing in this scene. Davis goes to the front of the line in the Oscar Balloon right now, dammit.

Not a surprise. She was devastating in very limited screen time in Antoine Fisher, and her appearance in Soderbergh's Solaris was chilling.

Good for her if her name gets out there more.

Viola Davis is always great. She's been on my radar since "Out of Sight" where even Soderberg in the commentary said, keep your sights on her, she's going to be working for a long time.

It should have already been there... The actress who played the part on Broadway won a Tony. It's a great role, even if it's a small one.

Did Hoffman & Streep move down in your rankings when you updated?

Too bad Tony winner Adriane Lenox didn't get a chance to reprise, but that was Shanley's call.

Can we discuss how Ron fucking Howard fought for the Broadway leads of his movie and John Patrick Shanley replaced the entire cast with more proven movie actors?

Will second (or third, or fourth) the mad Viola Davis-love...her SOLARIS performance keeps me coming back to that flick (along with Natascha McElhone's sweet, sweet ass), though more's the pity her series TRAVELER got cancelled last year by ABC.

I saw the movie last night and I was amazed at what she could do with just ONE SCENE!! She blew me away.

While you're at it, you should probably take Malkovich off the balloon. I just don't think his work is as strong as some of the others up there, especially in Burn After Reading.

She's also really good in FAR FROM HEAVEN, and her one scene in WORLD TRADE CENTER is the best thing in it.

Lipranzer beat me to it. For my money, Viola Davis MADE "World Trade Center". Her one scene was the only thing I still recall about that movie. She's been a great stage actress and has been around for years. I certainly hope she gets at least a nomination if not the statue.

Let's not forget her wonderful scene in Antwone Fisher. She was a revelation and deserves everything coming her way. I hope she gets the statue too....

Solaris is a very underrated film. She's very good in it. Whatever happened to Natscha McElhone?

McElhone is tied up with the Showtime series CALIFORNICATION. She suffered a tragedy earlier this year when her husband dropped dead in London while she was working in L.A. She's also pretty good in a small part in "The Company", a TNT miniseries that tries to be THE GOOD SHEPHERD.
