"I mean, if I knew it would take me 15 years to get back in the saddle and work again because of the way I handled things, I really would have handled things differently. I just didn't have the tools. I'm doing things differently this time around -- understanding what it is to be a professional, be responsible and to be consistent. Those are things that weren't in my vocabulary back then. Change for me didn't come easy; I didn't wanna change until I lost everything, until I realized that you better change, or, you know, blow your fucking brains out. Either you change and go on with life, or you're just a piece of shit." -- Wrestler star Mickey Rourke speaking this morning in a Manhattan press conference, as passed along by Defamer's Stu Van Airsdale.

Though I'm here at HE everyday, I typically do not post many comments.
I was, however, quite struck with Rourke's words from this interview. Having experienced a similar self-destructive patch in my own life, I sense an honestness here that lays aside the bullshit that we typically hear after life hits hard (actors or otherwise).
The line "I didn't wanna change until I lost everything"... It just seems genuine.
In the end, who really knows... other than Rourke. I do look forward to this film though, and I would love to hear feedback from anyone who has already had the chance to see it.
Cheers.

Since "The Wrestler" was partly filmed near where I love and even in one of my fave watering holes (Dingo's Den), I can attest that, according to many on site during the filming, Mickey Rourke hasn't really changed a bit.
Which is not at all the same as him gulling writers into believing he has by making a plea for sympathy. I also wish someone would publicly ask him some hard questions about his appearance and the wages of plastic surgery. He kind of looks like Eric Stoltz did in "Mask," and I for one prefer the old, seedy-looking Mickey Rourke.

I meant "where I live." Bearing in mind the old folk song, "I live not where I love," too.

When people talking about changing, they usually don't really change how they feel or what they think. They change how they present themselves and interact with the world. So I have no doubts the Mick is still an asshole... just not to the people who cut his paychecks.
