Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

"This Was A Man"

A "Conversations With History" talk with Studs Terkel, the Chicago-based author, columnist historian, actor, and broadcaster who was born in 1912, died earlier today. He told it straight and blunt and with great flavor, had done and seen incredible things, and came to know everything and meet almost everyone. A great man, a great life. What it must have been to have been 18 years old at the start of the depression, and what a great book he wrote from it -- Hard Times, published in 1970.

I saw Studs speak a number of times and met him once. His op ed in the Sun Times the weekend before the 2000 election puled me back from the brink on the Nader thing. He was the magnetic north of the American left.

Sad that he will miss out on what looks to be a good Tuesday. Still, it would have been much worse to lose him during the neocon heyday. His voice hung on through that dark age, thank God.

Jeffrey: Thanks for posting this interview, great stuff. I could listen to Studs for a couple of hours. A few things standout; "Listening," "Debating," "National Alzheimers," the real exchange of ideas and differences and of course the Kathy Kelley story.

You couldn't ask for a better interview subject. I almost feel sorry for Harry who had to interrupt to keep the interview focused.
