So how does John McCain "pull this one out of the pooper?," Stephen Colbert asked MSNBC's Joe Scarborough last night. You have to hand it to Scarborough for not mincing words.
My wife's not a big fan of Colbert, either. She totally gets that he's a spoof of right wing asshole TV personalities, but thinks it's too close to reality to be funny. However, she loves Jon Stewart, so I guess I'll keep her.
JoeScar is a mensch. He might be right wing, but he just spoke with more honesty in 6 minutes than Rush or Ann Coulter have in the last 10 years.
Proof Against The Existence Of God #71: Roger Ebert cannot speak, yet Bill O'Reilly can.
Are you serious? Colbert offers one of the most amazing sustained performances in the history of television -- playing a character four nights a week, and generating lots of laughs while doing it? Granted, it's gotten to the point where he regularly drops out of character to wink at the audience or laugh at his own jokes, which he used to be more rigorous about, but he's still doing the kind of TV performance comedy that we associate with people like Andy Kaufman.
Now, the Scarborough interview was a little unfortunate because Colbert had to frequently interrupt his answers in order to fit between commercials, so I can see that the above clip maybe doesn't play to all of his strengths. But Colbert is as well-made a comic TV character as Jiminy Glick or the best of the SNL recurrers, except much more prolific.
I think there needs to be a new show on comedy central.
Let's call it 'HOW LOW CAN IT GO' and it tracks the points for the Dow Jones because with all the hits it has been taking we may be seeing some real low numbers soon
Sean and Burma: Basically, it's just irritating and grating at this point. Sorry. It was funny for the first few months though, I'll give it that. At least Stewart stays fresh.
Yeah, I'd say what Colbert has been doing has been nothing short of amazing the last couple of years. Most importantly, it's not condescending - the show expects you to be able to be in on and get all the jokes.
Colbert's book "I Am America (And So Can You!)" was, and Jesus do I hate to use this cliche, the only book that literally made me laugh out loud. It was pure comic genius. Every sentence was perfectly crafted.
While sometimes I find his routine a bit annoying on the show, his delivery is impeccable. When Joe Scarborough asks how does McCain win and Colbert answers "Magic," BAM! Nobody could've nailed that without the false bravado he's cultivated for years.
Colbert gushing aside, it's nice to see Joe admit to selling out the American public by repeating the McCain lies for ratings. Classy.

I rarely watch Colbert, but every time I do I am amazed at the performance. The interviews are always a master class in improvisation.
It shows, again, the utter irrelevance of the Emmys that not only has he not won, he isn't even nominated in the comedy category in the first place.

Colbert is hilarious. Those first few months of his show were its weak moments. He's been consistently funnier than The Daily Show for some time now.

Colbert is the best thing on TV. Or very nearly.
I am grossed out, though, to find that I actually am attracted to that Scarborough asshole. Oh the humanity.
