Twilight

I understand and accept that Twilight is going to kill, but why...forget it. I give up. Forget I said anything. Nothing matters. You can't fight City Hall. I'm quitting early today and driving down to see Body of Lies. Report at 11 pm.

Can't wait to ignore this one in theaters...and on DVD...and on TV.
On the other hand, I would like to watch Let the Right One In again. Saw it a couple days ago. It was fantastic. I hope that Matt Reeves abandons his plans for an English speaking remake. The film was awesome just the way it is - and I saw it in a theater that was at least 50% teenagers, and they ate it up like candy.

Explaining why young chicks (along with my wife) are going to flock to Twilight is like trying to explain to women why you are watching Ronin, again, on cable even though you own the DVD.

Jeff, bro, they call them "chick flicks" for a reason. Check the pants, you weren't issued the equipment to fully appreciate them.

Hold up, this chick as seen "Ronin" a gazillion times 'cause it friggin rocks! I wouldn't see "Twilight" if you paid for my ticket, popcorn, soda, parking, babysitter, gas to get there AND a extra hundred for my trouble. No way!

As for why chicks will flock to this dreck, I got nothin. I read one Danielle Steele novel on a dare and still have nightmares (OK, not nightmares, but it wasn't a pleasant experience). My understanding is that this series of books is a Danielle Steelish set of books for the teen set. I could recommend some GOOD fantasy fiction if they want to read this sort of thing. Why can't people rock on the King Arthur anymore? Sigh.

Yeah guy with the RONIN analogy, let's not get extreme. This is a film for tweeners and teen girls.

I'm a sucker for a vampire picture, but this take on the genre (sub-genre?) is starting to look pretty tired.

Meanwhile, Near Dark is on Hulu.

Don't know about the movie, but the books reportedly combine "the attractions of a sermon and a strip tease". Perfect fodder for the abstinence-only (Can we call them Palinites?) crowd.

The "forbidden love" theme (and meme when it comes to these books) is the most powerful there is, for many of the fairer sex.

I'm not a tween, and neither are my friends who are going to see this film, but it is geared towards teens, obviously. I think older women are attracted to this story because it brings back those feelings one had when falling in love for the first time...only in this story, it's like on steroids.

I can understand tween girls likng this but as an adult woman the idea of a 140 year old man going after a 16/17 year old girl kind of borderline pedophile and not romantic in any way. The "forbidden love" aspect makes it even creepier. I think Stephanie Meyer must have some issues. I have not read the books so I might not be exacttly correct on the ages.

The thing about "Twilight" as books and (likely) movies is... they're pretty un-good. BUT if you take the probable subtext into account, they're fucking hysterical.

See, the author is a devout, conservative Mormon and the style/structure is identical that of those Christian teen-romance novels that focus on the "romantic" side of abstinence. So, blood-sucking as a metaphor for sensory pleasure and/or sex, with an emo-kid vampire in the "oh, man... I really wanna fuck/bite my girlfriend but it's a sin so instead I'll be tragic and dramatic about it!" role.

So... Mormon Vampire Abstinence Porn. How can ya not at least LOOK? ;)

This movie just looks terrible. It seems to be shot like a TV movie and the action sequences all look like unimaginative 2nd unit work. It's all so unimaginative. Kudos to the poster above who mentioned Near Dark, the best vampire movie since Nosferatu.

I'm yet another chick who digs Ronin. Maybe we should form a club.

Know why I'll be going to see this? One clue - I share a home with a thirteen year old who is gobbling up these books, she had the first one read in two days. Would have been one day but her bothersome school day interfered. All her friends are apeshit about these books. Jane Eyre just isn't cutting it anymore.
