Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

Two Guys Now

"I've seen Gus Van Sant's Milk (Focus Features, 11.26)," a director-actor friend wrote about 18 hours ago. "It's really really good. Sean Penn and Emile Hirsch are incredible. It's romantic and sexy and intimate and totally moving." I called the guy three times to try and get a little bit more, but no go. (Or not yet.) I was told today that the running time is just over two hours.

Let's hope Van Sant is back to form. I do have to ask: is this friend by any chance homosexual? It just might shape the way someone views this particular film, which is why I ask.

the person i know who's seen Milk - and loved it is (a) male and (b) straight. For whatever that's worth.

Just to clarify: if the source was homosexual that doesn't mean I'm discounting the opinion in any way, I was merely curious.

Sexy and intimate... the horrors of a movie about gay characters actually directed by a gay man!

When I read "really, really good" I instantly think: it doesn't sound like the person loved it. I mean, why not "great" or "amazing" or "truly wonderful." People aren't shy about superlatives, especially when they've gotten an inside peek at something.

So I read this as "Eh, pretty good. The acting is great though."

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

"Let's hope Van Sant is back to form." I didn't know Van Sant had lost anything. "Elephant" and "Paranoid Park" were both brilliant filmmaking. I'm glad he could indulge himself in his unique style of filmmaking and then come back with something more mainstream.

"Homosexual"? Isn't that a little formal Jay T.? That said, it kind of makes me feel more inportant than plain ol' 'gay'. Like the difference between 'terrorist' (Bombs! Missiles! Insane dictators with undeniable starpower!) and, say, 'towelhead' (Sand! Hummus! Beards!) BTW, Van Sant is my top pick for Most Erratic Talent Ever but when he's on fire...here's hoping Milk has it in spades.

I'm really looking forward to this, more than even W. A couple weeks ago I never heard of this movie, but watching the trailer gave me chills. I just hope this is one of the few times the vibe of the trailer lives up to the movie.
