"Is Gen. Colin Powell getting ready to endorse Sen. Barack Obama on Meet the Press this Sunday? Two sources close to Powell, speaking on the condition of anonymity, predict that he will. On the record, a third, Ken Duberstein, a Washington lobbyist and former White House chief of staff, didn't flatly deny it. 'You can say what you want,' he told me, 'but I didn't tell you that and neither did Powell.'" - from Howard Fineman's Newsweek column, posted last night.
Talk about an essential viewing experience. Meet The Press airs on Sunday mornings at...what is it, 8 am?
The other thing to watch this weekend, obviously, is Saturday Night Live, which will feature guests appearances by Sarah Palin and Josh Brolin. Obviously Palin and Tina Fey will appear side-by-side. The cool thing would be to have them sing a duet. "The Shoop-Shoop Song," I'm thinking. But really, how can anyone laugh at -- with -- Palin, given what she is and the rancid game she's playing? It's revolting to think of her getting a boost in her personal ratings because Lorne Michaels wants a boost for SNL.

An even funnier idea would be to do their version of the Marx Bros. mirror routine.
Now *that* would be ratings gold!

Wells to the Lord of Misrule: Brilliant idea! But Palin isn't talented enough to make it work. It would take a lot of rehearsal.

I was thinking about adding something along those lines but wanted to avoid raising the ire of those that (shudder) still think of her as a viable candidate.
Another idea would be to do a "Prince and the Pauper" thing, but I respect Mark Twain too much to cheapen his work.

No... open with an Emmy awards parody of last month's Tina Fey best comedic actress win. Have Fey walk up as presenter Brooke Shields and announce the winner... Tina Fey. Then have Sarah Palin walk up as Fey and turn her acceptance speech into a series of jabs at liberal condescension. We'd see the real Fey as Shields behind her reacting to the Palin's impression. It would kill.
Of course, yeah, you'd run the risk of making Lady Sancho Panza hip for one news cycle.

Someone actually yelled out "Pussy!" at Powell during last night's showing of W and we all clapped. He's still going to burn in hell whoever he endorses.

Exactly. While it's heartening that he's seen the light, Powell is too compromised to be of much of use to the Obama camp.

Actually i think it's crucial for Obama to get Powell's endorsement. I don't like the polls right now. Not at all.
As for Palin on SNL - Disgusting.

Lorne Michaels should be removed from the show...again. He is so deeply mediocre. What are his criteria for putting people on the show? The cast members of SNL for the last 10+ years are really unskilled; they are not inherently funny. They're like the over-obsessed kid in your improv class who knows the technique but tries too hard and never makes you laugh. They add nothing to the already tepid and uninspired writing. SNL today is like a focus-group version of the SNL of old, which would actually take a risk and piss off sacred cows. Now we have Palin coming on to fire up the base? Hopefully her incompetence extends to cue card reading along with her known non-ability to reason, speak complete sentences, and parent.
As for Colin Powell, I used to think Burton was being overly harsh in his "Mars Attacks!" swipe. We found out in 2003 that he hit it right on the head.

I don't think Powell's endorsement means anything either. He shamed himself in front of the entire world. Does anybody care what he has to say about anything anymore?

I really, really hope Palin does horribly on SNL... I agree with Jeff, I just can't laugh with her because I'm disgusted by what she stands for.

Powell should have endorsed Obama back in June. It won't mean much. WIll he campaign with Obama? That would be interesting!

Palin's appearance on SNL just now has convinced me more than ever that Tina Fey would be a much better VP choice. Palin was too self-conscious and the whole thing felt kind of sleazy since she was on just to try and further enhance her "average Joe" image. Her interaction with Alec Baldwin also wasn't funny at all (great surprise appearance, though, by Mark Wahlberg).

Great. The guy that got in front of that UN Security council and sold that fuckin war on Bush's behalf is now endorsing Obama.
Forgive me for not giving a shit.
Obama definitely does not need him. He would be better off consigned to the dustbin of history that the rest of the Bush administration belongs in.
Any decent liberal that is excited about the prospect of a Powell endorsement should think about this just a tad bit deeper.
Jesus.

John: I didn't mind how he made fun of Colin Powell, but I was irritated that he focused on Powell in the first place.
It should've been a spoof of b-flicks, and it ended up being some stupid social satire.
laze: I think the idea suggested behind prominent conservatives endorsing liberals is that it just shows how out of touch the GOP is with even long-time members.

Powell is our Sarah Palin and for the exact same base.
So not only does he give Obama positive media coverage to get away from the constant drumbeat of Ayers and ACORN bullshit, but its one more thing to make fence sitters more comfortable jumping into Obama's yard.
All Lorne Michaels does by inviting Palin on the show besides reminding everyone that he is perhaps creatively the worst show runner ever is to help repair her image. Which, gee, will make the guys at GE happy because a President McCain means all those pricey war toys will keep flying off the shelves.

I meant to add, and obviously I am stressing this, Powell is still the disgrace he was the second he stepped onto the UN floor.
And remember, this is the guy who helped with the failed cover-up of the Mai Lai Massacre. Fact.

I thought the Palin/Michaels/Baldwin sketch was awful - because of Baldwin. What could have been wincingly hilarious was made flat and rhythmless by his constant search for the next word on a teleprompter. Dude! You're the fucking actor in this scene! You can't memorize or improv your way through sixty seconds of camera time?
Poehler's rap was awesome, made only funnier by her uber-pregnancy. And Wahlberg's riff with Samberg only proved once again that SNL almost never knows how to close a sketch.
