Vodka Hustle

I absolutely take this video at face value. At first you think "no, can't be real, too appalling"...but it's not a put-on. The obviously desperate Dan Aykroyd is channelling Ed McMahon as he plugs a new luxury vodka that comes in bottles shaped like crystal alien heads. Just like the ones in Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Crystal Skull. Who would care about a hustle like this? I know, I know -- I'd be surprised.

It's a direct sequel to his cameo in Temple of Doom.

Just give us Ghostbusters 3 before Murray becomes the new Harrison Ford, Dan.

I know this will come as a shock to most, but at one time Dan Aykroyd was one of the more exciting and electric talents around. That was a long, long time ago, but that's the version I always have in my head whenever I see him, not so much in something like this (hey, a man's gotta eat), but in his ever more dismal feature films. Christ, he went downhill rapidly.

The great Dan Aykroyd of SNL has been dead a long time. The sellout Dan of the last 25 years is alive and well.. In fact this is probably his best work since Trading Places.

Jesus, I couldn't even watch the whole thing - this is like an extended bit from SNL that goes too long for it's own good. Aykroyd was my favorite from the original cast. It's a shame.

Why are you surprised? He did pretty well selling the Bass-O-Matic.

Nononononno. That's a satire. The popping sound effect gives it away. The "joy" line with the reveal that it's vodka. The bumps it the dolly shot. The confusion over whether it is triple or quadruple distilled. The confusion over whether they are using diamonds or crystals.

I am dead certain that this is a (very funny) gag.

Whether it's real or not, the joke is on people who get off on overpriced vodka they can then completely disguise the flavor of with assorted mixers.

Sold me. I'm such a nerd. I think it's funny imagining there's a little Ray Stantz in the real Aykroyd.

Whether this is a goof or not, Aykroyd really does have an intense interest in aliens and the supernatural. He did that doc on aliens two or three years back.
