W. Profiles

Here are some stats provided by Fandango about "more than 3,000 moviegoers" they've interviewed who are planning to see Oliver Stone's W. (opening tomorrow).

51% are male, and 58% are ages 25 to 49. 23% classify themselves as liberal; 22% as moderate and 18% as conservative. (What about the other 37%?) 34% say they voted for George W. Bush in a previous election. (People are admitting to this?) 27% say they will vote for John McCain, and 53% say they will vote for Barack Obama.

67% want to see it because of Oliver Stone's reputation as a controversial filmmaker. 10% say the presidential and vice presidential debates have made them more interested in seeing the movie. 6% say the film might impact how they vote in the upcoming presidential election.

Interesting stats.

I'm absolutely going to see this film this weekend.

Me: male, 25 to 49, liberal, did not vote for W., will not vote for John McCain, will vote for Barack Obama. I'm not interested because of Oliver's rep, but I do appreciate some of his other films and think he is an interesting guy based on interviews. My interest was caused by the coverage on this site, the advertising campaign, and my general interest in politics. No chance will this movie affect my vote.

These stats don't seem very noteworthy at all. With that said, I'm feeling an irresistable impulse to savagely beat those 6% who say it might effect their vote. For fuck's sake.

Let's play DarthCorleone's game...

Male, 25 to 49, unaligned, voted for W. both times, decided Obama should be president after his 2004 DNC keynote and will happily vote for him on Nov. 4th after caucusing for him in the primary.

Interested in W. because Any Given Sunday is one of my favorite movies of all time, and the Talking Heads W. trailer is one of the best of the year.

Yeah, work those contradictions out in your head.

Tracking is now saying it'll open between $8-10 million, so the over $10 million figure isn't so hot right now. Still, $34 million total gross in the first four weeks would be nice.

W. is surprisingly high on the list of pre-sales at Moviefone.com.

I'll be surprised if this pulls over $6 million this weekend. One friend who caught the local premiere tonight has this to say: "Boring. I'm glad they let us drink beer during the screening."

To alynch: "affect"... "affect" their vote, not "effect."

I fucking loathe Oliver Stone movies; I really liked Platoon when it came out, and loved Salvador, but God Damn his movies started to suck. A couple of years ago I went to see World Trade Center when another movie was sold out. My buddy and I sat through 45 minutes without a comment, then l looked at him and asked "do you want to leave?" He said "shit yeah", and we left. It was the first and only time I've ever walked out of a movie, and I've sat through Tony Danza's Going Ape.

But I confess I'm interested a bit in W, though I'll probably wait for it to show up on HBO.

I had two interesting experiences with the the trailer for W... I saw the trailer in front of Appaloosa in a more conservative suburb of Seattle, and when it was over I heard the guy behind me whisper to his buddy, "pass."

Then I saw it the next week in front of Religulous in uber liberal downtown Seattle. When it was over, the crowd literally clapped hardily and there were actual whistles of delight. It was a little creepy.

Anybody who'd walk out of a movie loses ALL credibility when it comes to judging that film.

"WTC" was a very good film and anybody who says different doesn't know what they're talking about. Stone was able to get back to his classical storytelling abilities (i.e. Platoon and Salvador) to tell a straightforward story of courage and survival in face of evil.

The fact that you "loathe" Oliver Stone movies tells me all I need to know about you. Thank you very much.

Also, anybody who says a film was "boring" or "bad" without telling why loses their credibility.

Anyway, I'd be surprised if "W." does open to over $10 million. I wish that it would, but I doubt it. I hope I'm wrong.

To StoneFan1 --

I agree; I don't have any credibility when it comes to World Trade Center; at least as a whole. The first 45 minutes was terrible, overacted, and oddly boring. So my credibility rests only on judging those first 45 minutes.

In terms of the other films; while my politics seemed to be aligned with Stone, his films just strike me as bad. I have zero problem with others liking his films and there opinions are as valid as mine; just as I don't have a problem with someone who doesn't like the films of Herzog, Moodysson, or my other faves.

By the way, I forgot to metion JFK; I thought that film was just brilliant from start to end, even though I thought the argument it was putting forward was bogus and false. I just loved that movie.
