Maybe I'm alone on this but I felt like Wahlberg very easily upstaged Palin on last night's show. He was funnier and seemed much more self-deprecating than Palin. I wish that the show had put Fey and Palin together more and I hated Palin's obvious enjoyment of and agreement with the lyrics of Poehler's negative song about Obama - it just reinforced the already hostile and negative view I have of her.
Weird... I DVR'ed it and must have fast forwarded over that segment so thanks for linking it... I kind of figured that Wahlberg on Jimmy Kimmel was a set-up and that's kind of what I expected him to do (make fun of himself) but I thought they could have done more with Palin. (I liked the idea of her making fun of Tina Fey's Fed Ex commercial with McCain playing the part of Martin Scorsese. "Governor Palin, there's something I want to talk to you about... " etc.)
(I liked the idea of her making fun of Tina Fey's Fed Ex commercial with McCain playing the part of Martin Scorsese. "Governor Palin, there's something I want to talk to you about... " etc.)
I was hoping for the same thing. He offers her a time share instead of vice presidency.
I was hoping they would have drawn the gag with Wahlberg out longer. But he definitely was better than Palin. (Although if Palin did the rap, the election would be over).
The whole interaction between Baldwin and Palin was lame and awkward - they'd have been better off just sticking with Fey answering the reporters' questions. Also, if you're going to have Palin on Weekend Update, why not pair her up with Fey as Palin and have them do the update together or at least do something that plays upon their physical similarities?
and to Josh Massey: to me, self-deprecating means not taking yourself too seriously and showing a willingness to poke fun at yourself. Smiling politely as Alec Baldwin rambles on and encouraging Amy Poehler as she makes fun of Barack Obama does not cut it for me when it comes to being self-deprecating. Now, on the other hand, talking to a donkey and telling it to "Say hi to your mother for me!" is much closer to what I consider self-deprecation.
We don't like the bitch and she lacks the self awareness gene. Wahlberg understood completely what the joke was, and he went for it. Palin was there either to drum up some interest for the campaign, or to set her sights on a second career when her political career goes up in flames.
She doesn't get the joke, because the joke is that she is a moron.
It might have helped, Massey, if she performed the rap herself rather than just sitting there hoo-hahing and grinning like a total moron (see Mjs' posting above).
Josh Massey says...
You're going to take a shit? From who? Or are you going to leave a shit? You're going to pinch a loaf in a toilet bowl, leaving something that was previously not there and that's taking?...Alright.

I was gonna say something about Massey's thin-skinned humorlessness about Palin (and again I ask: WHY, if you're really not a Republican? You just feel so bad for the poor underdog?) but George beat me to it and did it much better. Perfect.
All this "good sport" stuff sucks, anyway. Takes all the fun out of it. Now the Wahlberg-talks-to-animals thing is just a prelude to the actual-Wahlberg-talks-to-animals thing. Would be funnier if he really were pissed-off.
And Palin yukking it up with the SNL crew is just surreal.
Why am I defending Palin? Because it's easy to do when the attacks against her are so consistently mean-spirited and thoughtless.
You're right - I didn't vote for her. But what you all seem to be forgetting is just because you don't vote for somebody doesn't mean you have to hate them. And the hate directed toward Palin has been sickening, especially when it has been based on Internet-created conjecture instead of the truth (and from the same people who, for months, defended Obama against the same kind of despicable Internet-created conjecture).
I don't hate McCain/Palin. And even though I'd rather see the Republicans in the executive office, I don't hate Obama/Biden. I've never engaged in personal attacks on any of the candidates, just disagreed with them on policy. You know, what is supposed to happen.
When I see Palin hold her own on SNL, I'm going to give her credit for it - which Democrats seem unable to do today. She's not a comedian, not an actress, and she didn't embarrass herself. She was incredibly self-deprecating, just by being there. What, do you think the script was just improvised and she had no idea what they were going to say? (Oh right, she's just too stupid to understand what they were saying. Exactly.).
You're right, Massey, our dislike of Palin is all personal and has nothing at all to do with her past record in Alaska. Nothing to do with the fact that she forced rape victims to pay for their own rape kits (up to $1000). Nothing to do with the fact that she just got her first passport a couple of years ago and has only been to Mexico, Canada, and the Iraqi border (granted, she is able to see Russia from Alaska and that makes her qualified to negotiate with Palin). Nothing to do with the fact that she espouses "family values" but has a daughter who was statutorily raped and is now pregnant. Nothing to do with the fact that people constantly utter racist slogans directed at Obama at her rallies and she says nothing and does nothing to put a stop to them. Nothing to do with the fact that she believes that dinosaurs and human beings coexisted on Earth at the same time ala the Flinstones. Nothing to do with the fact that her husband was once a card-carrying member of an organization that advocates Alaska's secession from the United States. Thank you for correcting all of us who are engaging in these nasty personal attacks against Palin that are completely lacking in any substance!
"...even though I'd rather see Republicans in the executive office..."
ANY Republicans? See, that's where the rest of us just don't get you, and never will. Prominent conservatives are jumping ship left and right, realizing how bad these two would be right now. But still, you really, seriously think that Palin is qualified to take over if McCain doesn't make it?

I don't think she's too stupid at all. You can see her kind of clenching her teeth, tolerating being in enemy territory because they told her it'd be a good idea. There she is, watching as the SNL cast slaps her in her face with the fact that her own running mate doesn't think she's qualified to hold a press conference. That's gotta rankle.
In fact, I think she's in her element here, reading from a script. Beauty queen, sportscaster...she's a performer, not a public servant -- and if she gets a lucrative gig at Fox riling up the base, it's good for everyone -- Palin, her family, the country, and the people of Alaska.
I have a feeling Massey won't be responding to Cinefan's brilliant post. It was a bitch slap of major proportions.
If you're Palin, or a Palin fan, you can't support the way she is campaigning and then feel bad for her because some people hate her. She's just a bad person, with wild beliefs, who is attempting to incite hatred and violence through her words.

Smiling through Baldwin's spiel and playing along with Poehler's rap wasn't self-deprecating enough?

I wouldn't be surprised is more interaction with Fey was proposed and Fey herself nixed it -- she's been pretty outspoken about her disdain for Palin.
You'd think they could have done something more involving Oliver Stone, too.
