Way Back When

At a recent New York Film Festival Changeling press conference, director Clint Eastwood announced that he's not on the team for Obama or McCain, despite a general understanding that he's always been a right-of-center type of guy. Which he is, except in a Libertarian vein. (I've never felt negatively toward Libertarians -- I've always respected where they're coming from.)

Eastwood said that first political alignment, which happened in the early '50s, was to become an "Eisenhower Republican." Clint used the exact same term with me during a Bridges of Madison County phoner we did in '95.

You do realize that most libertarians are anti-environmentalists, rigth Jeff? Their "freedom" to drive a Hummer and throw bottles in the trash -- instead of a recycling bin -- trumps any serious consideration of global warming. For a more detailed list of misguided (and a few worthwhile) libertarian causes, consult a few seasons of Penn and Teller's Bullshit. For some reason, I find this show amusing, even though Penn's powers of persuasion are minimal at best.

Wells to JD: I confess to not being all that well read about present-day incarnations of Libertarian thought and behavior. I've always seen them, perhaps unrealistically, as the true carriers of conservative spirit. Don't tread on us, no taxes, leave us alone, we'll respect you if you respect us, etc. I have this belief that they're not neocons, however, and while they may selfishly resent government attempts to contain global warming, that they respect the environment. No? The essence of conservatism is to "conserve," which also means to preserve that which is good and lasting and eternal in life, which obviously includes the health of planet Earth. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm not persuaded that Eastwood is a Hummer-driver who tosses beer bottles in the trash can in the park. I'm open to whatever information there is out there that proves me wrong.

For the worst example of a Libertarian go no further than Bill Maher.

Libertarian beliefs are at the root of some of the worst disasters of the past few years -- including Katrina and the current financial crisis. They're anti-government (FEMA is a joke!) and anti-regulation (free market, yea!). Did you see Andrew Sullivan as a guest on Maher pathetically blaming the mortgage crisis on individuals who took out loans they couldn't pay back? To the extent that that's of course true, what good is it? Where's the solution? Libertarians "individual responsibility" credo is nice and all, but in the end it's close to useless. You can say "everyone act more responsibly" -- but when you use that as the foundation for governing, you start to see what a naive worldview it is, and society goes to shit pretty fast.

Maher sometimes calls himself a libertarian, but he disagrees with virtually everything the CATO Institute has to say.

Wait, so he's pathetic for telling the truth? Not sure what you're trying to say.

I'm a libertarian - I even voted for Bob Barr already at an early polling place. And Wells did a damn fine job of describing my political ideology. I have trouble agreeing with anybody who suggests government is the answer to anything, because I can't think of one thing government actually does well. (Though Wells, only the most nutjob libertarians would say "no taxes." Most of us are just about "less.")

Spacesheik: "For the worst example of a Libertarian go no further than Bill Maher."

Replace Bill Maher with Bob Barr, and I'll agree.

Josh: "Wait, so he's pathetic for telling the truth?"

Only a convenient truth. They completely ignore lenders willing to pay billions to said irresponsible people.

"I'm a libertarian - I even voted for Bob Barr already at an early polling place."

Pro-tip: If you voted for a guy who prosecuted someone on the basis of his extra-marital affairs, you're not really Libertarian.

"I have trouble agreeing with anybody who suggests government is the answer to anything, because I can't think of one thing government actually does well."

Then you're obviously not acquainted with the Euro being higher than the dollar, in spite of that region having more socialism than us.

Libertarians believe in the total deregulation of the marketplace.

They believe that any regulation on the market, no matter how small it is, amounts to socialism.

This philosophy is responsible for our current economic crisis.

I don't know enough about Libertarians to have a strong opinion about them one way or another, but in interviews of his I've read, Eastwood hasn't struck me as being anti-environmentalist. There's always the possibility he's blowing smoke, of course.

Is it possible he's for McCain and he just doesn't feel like dealing with all the "civil" debate regarding his choice? He already had Spike Lee call him out over some bogus PC notion. To then not support Obama would have to then qualify Eastwood as a full fledged racist. Plus I think in a movie 40 years ago his character shot a Native American and a Mexican, we all know what that means.
