Who's seen it? Do we in fact have another CITY OF GOD on our hands?

Think 5 seasons of THE WIRE in 2 hours, in Naples. It's heady stuff, but pretty gripping and Garrone really knows what's what behind the camera.

I found it pretty boring, really. Gets it kinda together in the last half hour, though.

I saw the first hour or so at the NY Film Festival and I was generally underwhelmed and unimpressed but I had some distractions going on so I'll watch it again. Definitely no City of God there... not even as good as City of Men from what I saw.

Incidentally, while it might be eligible for LAFCC, it's not eligible for either New York critics' group. It joins The Lives of Others and 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days in the "eligible in a year" category which basically means NY can only consider them well after they've been released on DVD.

Saw it in London a few months ago. HIDEOUSLY overrated and dull. Offensive to compare it to City Of God and outright sacrilegeous to mention The Wire.

Avoid.

The "City of God" comparisons are understandable, but I found it quite a different animal -- less kinetic and more meditative, even amid the busy narrative. I was thoroughly impressed. My review at In Contention, for anyone interested:
