Bazzed Out?

For some reason I found myself unable to post anything after catching Australia yesterday afternoon at the AMC 25 on 42nd Street. I turned on the laptop-avec-aircard in some noisy irritating sports bar on Eighth Avenue....nothing. Some kind of lethargy virus had taken over my system. I tried later on at home...still nothing. Sometimes it's better to just give in to the veg impulse.

Here's Todd McCarthy's mildly positive review:

True words Mr. Wells. It takes some time to adjust to Luhrmann's directing style but sooner or later you groove with him. Was harder with Romeo+Juliet than with Moulin Rouge! tho. Not sure what he has in the bag this time so please bring on your review Jeff.

the movie's awful. some of the other critics at the screening i attended in los angeles last night actually dug it, but it's a brain melter (i was done after an hour), which is probably why you felt/ are feeling the veg vibe. that said, i'm happy to see that at least one director can make nicole kidman seem alive, but it's sad that the end result is something this broad and cartoonish; ten minutes into the movie i decided that if i never had to see another massive, mugging close-up of her face again in my life i'd be a happy man.

I remember feeling totally skullfucked (as opposed to mindfucked) for a good day or two after Moulin Rouge. I remember thinking I never wanted to feel that way after a movie ever again. The trailer for Australia alone made me want to skip it, but it did make me curious how Nicole Kidman could go from a Suzie Wong cheongsam to Andrews Sisters drag to the LL Bean catalog all in the same movie. And did that orchid remain in her hair during the entire love scene?
