To go by this just-released trailer, The Reader, it would seem, is a reasonably strong acting-honors thing for Kate Winslet because she plays someone who sharply defines herself in terms of emotional need (i.e., an affair with a younger guy) and by being a good Nazi guard. Whereas in Revolutionary Road she's playing a '50s surburban wife beset by Cheeverish ennui and struggling with despair. It's the difference between declaration and guilt vs. aspiration and lament.

Wow, judging by that trailer Winslet campaigning for Supporting here seems like major category fraud. She even has billing over Fiennes!

I wasn't thrilled with the trailer; looked a little dry and stale.
Sure, Winslet and Fiennes are both phenomenal actors. But I don't know...it's not doing much for me, especially when compared against so many other great-looking winter movies that are on the horizon.
I am sure it'll be a class-act all the way but it looked a little off for some reason. Anyone agree?

Kate Winslet is such a freakin BRILLIANT actress, the only one who come close to her are Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton.

Am I missing something? I saw the trailer the other day. But how does Winslet have an affair with a younger man who grows up to be older than her?

I'm more concerned that he grows up to have a completely different face and accent. Should have cast Stellan.

Am and huge fan of the novel as well as of KW and RF, and it looks promising to me.

And this has something to say about Nazis and complicit guilt that the other 99 million movies about the subject haven't already covered?
It's nice to know that the bottom of the WW2 well of story ideas is still being scraped for any leftover residue lest we overlook yet another 160-odd minutes of punishment like those Spike Lee already inflicted this year.

Unison: Yeah, it's clearly a Lead role but putting her in Supporting would not be unprecedented. Just look at Jennifer Connelly in A BEAUTIFUL MIND or Tatum O'Neal in PAPER MOON.

Kate Winslet is a great actress, but she should try being in something that's entertaining and a little fun for once.

Like The Holiday? Much more depressing than Nazis.
