"I saw Quantum of Solace last weekend," says Jett in an e-mail this morning from London. "Great action movie. I liked it better than Casino Royale, although the plot wasn't fantastic. I was stirred by seeing a hint of Bond's personal struggle over that girl from Royale. Inner anguish makes Bond more human in this movie. Plus, I saw it with digital projection and great sound, and it kind of leaves you with a wow feeling at the end."

Saw this a few weeks ago at the cast and crew screening and unfortunately I can't agree with the above. It's a very stylish movie, but it's precisely the full, satisfied 'Bond is Back' feeling from the end of Casino Royale that is missing from this film.
It feels like a Marc Forster film, in that it seems to be caught between more mainstream, big movie ideas and scenes and trying to underplay them in a more 'art film' way. Unfortunately trying to be both dilutes the films sense of verve, and it never really takes off in any fashion comparable to the opening chase, the airport scene or even the poker game of Royale.
I wanted to love this film, having rewatched Casino Royale the night before in pristine Blu Ray, but that probably dampened the experience overall. It feels like a second act of a movie. Great scene with a body and a dumpster though. And Craig is as always, excellent. It's not terrible, just not stellar.

Jett brings up a good point about the digital projection and sound. I saw the film at a screening, and my heart died a little when I heard the tinny sound of full digital not kicking into effect. The sound never did kick in, and while I liked the film, that aspect certainly impacted my full immersion into it.

I will go and see it again, I don't want to already be disappointed by the rebirth of Bond. I had no interest left in the character prior to Casino Royale, but that film completely won me over.
Quantum isn't bad, it's just didn't strike me as as good it's predecessor.

The film is very disappointing. It's trying too hard to be The Bourne Ultimatum (copying three action scenes from that film) and ends up feeling pretty uninspired. Forster's arty little captions for each city felt out of place in a Bond movie and Craig is pretty dull in the role to be honest. The storyline is shallow and boring.
The you have the problem of not being able to tell what is happening in the action sequences, they're cut far too fast, especially the opening car chase and the fight on the ropes. Forster can't do action.

I think I've got it now. It sounds like some people like the movie, and some don't...that about right?
At this point I'm more curious about the Star Trek trailer.

I'd hardly say P. vice whines and bitches...that seems to be more the response to his opinions and criticisms. He's cynical as hell, sure, but almost always right, at least to some degree.

Solace is nowhere NEAR as good as Royale. The plot is paper thin and Bond is robbed of the deeper character progression Craig was able to imbue him with last time round; this time he's just angry and pissed at the world. The female characters are both totally throwaway, two-dimensional ciphers. it's like they took the Royal etemplate and stripped out all the story and character development.
"Why are they just playing cards for ten minutes? Blow some shit up already!" seems to be the mindset that created this Bond film.
It's also a SHOCKING Bourne rip-off. Royale was clearly influenced by Greengrass, but Solace takes it almost to the point of parody; you feel you're watching a Bourne film as soon as the herky-jerky opening car chase kicks in. The rooftop chase and the later fight in the apartment are also blatant swipes from Greengrass's pair of films.
The name's Bourne. James Bourne.
