A week or two ago James Lillis created this image for a t-shirt that's being sold for $25.94, blah blah. He created this sometime in late October? Why didn't he wait until next April? I'd be all over this if I was a Warner Bros. vp running Heath Ledger's Best Supporting Actor campaign.

Looks like Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes is going to lose its rank of worst remake. http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117995429.html?categoryid=13&cs=1

Not to encourage D.Z.'s threadjack, but an "Oldboy" remake with Nicolas Cage starring and Justin Lin directing had been in talks for a long time before collapsing.

Waiting till April on the shirt would be silly; the image is based on the election that will have been over for half a year by then.
And Nick, while this admittedly is a choice akin to those made by victims caught in one of SAW's deathtraps, I'd rather see Justin Lin remake Oldboy than Steven Spielberg.

Planet of The Apes the worst remake? I'd watch that any day over Cage's The Wicker Man.

Sorry to break it to you but this t-shirt is neither very original nor very funny.
It's very obvious.
Oh, and Spielberg can (and should) remake anything. Fuck, he can remake Jaws and it will be the best movie ever.

Steven Spielberg and Will Smith for Oldboy?
I'm virtually speechless. Think the remake will retain any of the original's edge?

Presumably, it will be the same kind of "gourmet popcorn" movie Spielberg claimed he made with MINORITY REPORT.

I actually think that Oldboy has a lot of room for improvement, (I watch Lady/Mr Vengeance more often) and that you could do a great 3 hour epic version of it.
Justin Lin might have made a very interesting movie. I don't think it was just a paycheck job for him. It looked like something he really wanted to do. Also, His Fast and the Furious film was actually pretty fantastically entertaining. I mean, he got Sonny Chiba to play a Yakuza boss, that's gotta count for something.
Spielberg's oeuvre just doesn't match this film. He makes movies about the redemption of the patriarchal figure. I haven't seen all of his movies, but pretty much every one I have seen has been about his parent's divorce in one way or another. I don't want to spoil Oldboy...but the content of that film is in direct opposition to Spielberg's strengths.

Hollywood should avoid doing a remake of "Oldboy" unless they plan to go through with the ending intact. Which I just don't see happening.
Having seenThe Wrestler, having Darren Aronofsky direct Mickey Rourke on a low budget would have been the way to go, if a remake was even necessary.

Spielberg and Smith could pull this off if they don't change anything that made the original special. Like everyone else, I'm wondering if they have the balls to keep the ending. If they keep the ending, this could be a very interesting film. But is Smith even old enough to pull that off? This is truly the craziest project ever. The idea of a mainstream film where audiences see Will Smith fucks his daughter. They have to go all the way.

Wicker Man remake passes for whom, D.Z.? I like how u make these blanket statements like they point to some sort of objective truth that, "Great Scott!", the rest of us just somehow miss.

I love Spielberg, but, to me, the only way he could make an "Oldboy" remake compelling is to ditch the majority of his usual impulses (a la Cameron Crowe with "Vanilla Sky") and just make something bugnuts. And whoever mentioned Mickey Rourke above ... that would be a perfect choice. There'd have to be a lot of CGI used on his face, though, to show the younger version.

"Annapolis" is one of the great overlooked masterpieces of our time.
Seriously, though, Spielberg doing "Oldboy" would also be just another reason for him to move the Lincoln movie to the bottom of the deck yet again. I'd much rather see that than an "Oldboy" remake.

Wow, people said Spielberg-Oldboy and I thought that was a joke. But I don't know why they don't go for Mr. Vengeance instead, which is a far better film than Oldboy... any movie that would end with Will Smith chopped up in a plastic garbage bag would probably be the best movie of all time.
