Pruning Shears

The final official running time for Baz Luhrman's Australia (11.26) is 165 minutes. Straight from the horse's mouth (i.e., 20th Century Fox distribution).

Monday morning update: Two U.S. exhibition sources have told a colleague that Australia's running time is 155 minutes, and yet an Australian media source who saw it last night has written to say it's "definitely" 165 minutes. The confusion will be cleared up soon, as Baz Luhrman's film is screening for NY press on Wednesday and Thursday.

I'm smelling the biggest bomb of the season, if not the year.

It won't even make 20 million domestic.

I dunno, Oprah absolutely loved it! Never underestimate females when it comes to a love story.

The screening invite I got said 155 Minutes... maybe you talked to the wrong horse. It'll make $20 million its opening week.

I'm feeling decidedly ambivalent about seeing this, mainly because all I can think of everytime I see the trailers is "Far and Away". Plus the chopping and changing of the ending makes me nervous. But then again Baz's films are always gorgeous to look at and leave you on a high: Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet, Strictly Ballroom. So I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

I'm seeing it on Wednesday and I'm pretty concerned. The trailer is horrible, I know that. It had the effect of diminishing my enthusiasm greatly. I'm fine with it being 2:45, I just don't know how that time will be filled. The war is supposedly crammed into the final half hour.

If the movie makes under $75M domestic, Kidman's status as a major star is done.

Very curious to see how this film turns out. The trailers are visually stunning...but something does seem a little off.

I feel sorry for Jackman, since this flick might hurt Wolverine.

It should at least hit $50 million DOM. For it to make more it has to be a serious oscar contender

Wolverine has already wrapped, D.Z, it's in post. I also fail to see how there is a significant crossover audience between that and Australia.

The 165 minute running time is accurate -- it's absolutely NOT 155 minutes. A generally cynical friend of a friend, a cynical hipster type in her 30s, saw it a few hours ago and reviews via text message: "Cartoonish, operatic, visual effect wanna-be spiritual dross. Entertains mildly. Kidman intensely annoying, but calms down after a while."

I saw this trailer a month ago and thought it was laughable. I liked Moulin Rouge but this looks like awful.
The biggest reason this will tank is because the same ladies that this may appeal to will not be willing to sit through a near-3 hour flick so soon after watching Twilight.
My wife is choosing between THREE groups of friends who are going to see Twilight opening weekend. They are all in their thirties and have not even mentioned Australia.

I, for whats it's worth, HATED Moulin Rouge. But it wouldn't suprise me if this thing turned into another Titianic. Maybe not as big. A decent opening and long legs.

The buzz seems about the same as Titanic before it opened.(People predicting disaster, costly delays, ect ect..) Never estimate the power of a visually stunning corny romance.
