I had a conversation on Skype a while ago with Jett, who's attending Syracuse University's London annex until early December. I asked if he was thinking of going to Quantum of Solace this weekend. "Yeah, I might go...maybe," he said. The average British moviegoer has a different attitude. Quantum of Solace earned $8 million yesterday on its opening day of business, making it the biggest Friday opener of all time in the U.K. Variety's Archie Thomas reports that the "previous Friday best was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire with $6.5 million ."

"Quantum of Solace" is at the top of my list of films to see this year. I've read that it is the shortest of the Bond films and that intrigues me even more as it should be lean & mean which is a lesson more big action films should learn. Of course, the Bourne films have been doing that as well. Again, can't wait for a little "Quantum of Solace".

Incoherent plot, flat pacing, drab visuals, awful theme song. Half an hour before the end the narrative awakens, yawns, stretches its arms, and goes back to sleep. Loved Casino Royale, but this is turgid.

I've got to chime in here Jeff and say I was absolutely blown away by the movie.
Now I really enjoyed Casino Royale and thought it was a terrific reboot for a series ailing under the self-parody of the latter Brosnan movies.
Casino gave the series back its credibility and Forster has bravely made a brutal action extravaganza. It is an exhausting watch, but in a good way. Bourne comparisons are inevitable - the movie is edited to within an inch of its life. But man - there's action in this that is just frickin awesome.
Stand-out sequence at the opera half-way through which I won't spoil is borderline genius.
As the next chapter in what is clearly a paved out saga that may span four or five movies it is a worthy entry. It doesn't insult your intelligence; has a surprisingly cynical eye towards the state of the world, and contains some truly thrilling filmmaking.
I wasn't expecting it to rock, but in the end actually got the James Bond movie I'd been waiting to see.
The humour way well return next time, but for now this is one pissed off James Bond - which means a huge time for all anyone who likes those senses throttled.

and bachelorcool - each to their own opinion and all that - but the plot wasn't remotely incoherent.
It was slick and made you work to follow it (without having to spoon-feed) which is what a good Bond movie should do.
It must be a difficult watch if you don't know what the hell is going on - but I definitely didn't have that problem.

It was much better than I expected. QOS is maybe not as good as CR but still one of the best Bond films and very diffrent from the previous installments of the franchise. Filled with action but not short of depth, this is probably the most serious Bond film ever.

I think Bond skews older. Then again, I've been a fan since I was eight.

It is not very good.
But then neither was Casino Royale. There's no plot, no humour, no fun and way too much shaky cam and quit cut editing..
What I can't work out is why some people loved CR but not this. They played very similarly for me.
The producers have clearly decided James Bond fans would prefer it if Bond films became Jason Bourne films. I blame Jeff Wells.
