Rally Round

"I saw Gran Torino last night," says HE reader Andrew. "It's clunky and heavy-handed at times, but very effective. Eastwood the actor has never been better in a moving and often hilarious performance. This kind of reminds me of the Million Dollar Baby syndrome. Like Flags of Our Fathers, the hyped Changeling underwhelmed me. But like Baby, the out-of-nowhere Gran Torino completely works."

Gran Torino is having its first big L.A. press screening next Monday night (12.1). Those of us on the other coast, per custom, will have to wait.

M$B has copped a fair bit of post-Oscar flack. I still love it though. It is one of the top 4 or 5 real melodramas of the new decade, and is my favourite adaptation of the Galatea/Pygmalion myth.

After the screeching caricature that was Hillary Swank's HEE HAW meets CRASH family, this one looks like Clint has finally made the complete jump into Haggis territory. Only one question remains for me: How far into the movie does his dog bite it?

It screened at the DGA last night and was very well-received.

Clint is GREAT in it.

I beg to differ. I think it's the worst thing Eastwood has involved himself with in years. It feels like it was shot over one weekend with no lights. The dialogue and performances are horrible. Clint has one or two good moments, but his grunting tough guy bigot is a complete caricature. As a huge Eastwood fan, I'm sad to say this thing is a complete waste of time and will garner absolutely ZERO nominations.

Kaned: It would have to have fumes coming off it to be worse than "Space Cowboys."

Is GRAN TORINO in the 2:20 range like most of Clint's recent pictures?

The sight of Clint back in Gunny Highway-era gravel-voiced grump mode is going to OWN at any length and even if the film is closer to DEAD POOL than to M$B (hell, I actually wish it WAS closer to that '80s kinda Clint, but I assume that's not likely.)

Clint is a LEGEND and it would rule to see him win a statuette for acting, and the Academy would probably be most inclined to give it to their icon Clint over just about anyone else... BUT man, very conflicted because in this PARTICULAR year, it might cost MICKEY ROURKE the greatest comeback story of the year, and some recognition that's long overdue.

Another Oscar for a man who already has four Academy Awards on his mantle? Why, for sentimental reasons? Sentiment didn't exactly work for Peter O'Toole two years ago and he's a much better actor than Clint. I love Eastwood but enough's enough. Just one point of view

When we mention SPACE COWBOYS, are we talking about the perfectly decent comedy with Eastwood, Sutherland, Garner and Tommy Lee as surly old astronauts? Yeah that was fine. And it's the perfect TNT at 2 AM movie.

Maybe Eastwood has another Oscar worthy item besides his acting in Gran Torino: Best Song. Did you hear the "Gran Torino" theme in http://warnerbros2008.warnerbros.com/#/movies/grantorino/score/score13 ? Eastwood voice in it is beyond rusty, but Jamie Cullum does a great rendition of this beautiful/sad tune. I can easily imagine the two of them singing "Gran Torino" in the Academy Awards Ceremony. Who knows...

He is definitely in Gunny Highway mode for the full extent of Grand Torino - but the movie is nowhere near as entertaining or well crafted. You think it's heading in a Charles Bronson/Death Wish III direction and then it downshifts into a tepid, surroage father/son slash bigot turns humane and feels outrage for the social injustices of the world kinda flick. This seriously feels like the misguided output of a Cannon film circa mid 80s, where they were taking a few "artistic" risks. This is not a vigilante piece. It's trying to be something more "gentle" and "existential." But the underlying story is too creaky and has been seen before - usually in exploitation type films - ad nauseum. The audience doesn't even have strong production values or performances to fall back on. It seriously is a tiny, very intimate chamber piece for Clint and the bullet never gets clean of the barrel in any interesting way. It's been marketed as Clint takes on the local gang to protect an immigrant family - but that's not the gear it operates in.
