Sunday Final

The latest estimate is that Twilight will end up with $70 or $71 million by tonight. It made about $20.7 million yesterday plus $35,948,000 combining Thursday midnight and Friday. It'll bring in another $45 million or so during the five-day Thanksgiving holiday (especially with fewer people travelling this year due to economic worries). It will probably end up with $150 to $160 million at the end of the day.

Quantum of Solace will make $27,193,000 by tonight, which is a 60%drop from last weekend's opener. That's not a good hold. It should have been down about 40% to 45 % tops, meaning that people who saw it last weekend didn't like it all that much.

I still think the film could have been better with another director, but I am just glad that this cast got all this coverage.I cant wait to see Little Ashes, Pattinson new film about Salvador Dali and also Kristen other films. and I am also DELIGHTED to see Miley Cyrus and Travolta not winning the box office

Pent up demand for Quantum based on Royale is the reason for a big second weekend drop. Alot of peeps saw it last weekend. It'll have a big Thanksgiving weekend coming up. And it'll be the biggest Bond yet. It's the best action movie of the year.

I am still in awe after seeing Synecdoche, NY last night. I read the reviews from Ebert and Dargis, which are two of the best pieces of movie writing in 2008. Just a brilliant, brilliant film. Kaufman is on a different level.

Saw Bolt. Enjoyed it. The crowds will come around. Disney's running a marathon, not a sprint, with this one.

Summit should send Brad Weston a big box of hugs and kisses for making the biggest bone headed move of any studio executive in history. Paramount lost out on a billion dollar franchise because of Weston's keen insight to what the public wants to see.

No, it shouldn't have dropped more than 45-50%. There was no direct competition aimed at its core demographic, and the closest thing resembling an action film was Eagle Eye.

Madagascar 2's opening was just a few notches shy of Quantum's, yet the former had no trouble avoiding a dropoff greater than 45% in its second weekend.

Bond is doing just fine. He will return. I don't see any of the three Thanksgiving openers making too much of a dent.

I noticed that the Christian-themed Fireproof, at No. 13, has made $31 million to date. That's an impressive number. Kirk Cameron is back.

QoS dropped because of very mixed word-of-mouth.
Twilight had a awful internal multiplier. It was very frontloaded

Quantum will still end up as the highest grossing Bond, and it's US numbers will be a fraction of its world total.

Summit has a shot at the big time here - hope they don't blow it.

I wouldn't have thought I'd have to address it in this thread, but SYNECDOCHE is a piece of shit, one of the worst films of the year. Truly an arrogant abortion.

Of course Bond will still return. But he'll probably return with gadgets and jokes.

The US take will be a fraction of the gross, but the producers want that US take. They want it to be huge. It's why they envied The Bourne Ultimatum so, when Casino Royale easily outgrossed it worldwide.

So I doubt the producers take a great deal of solace in these figures. Not when Bond is the only action film currently in wide release. Quantum may end up as the highest-grossing Bond film, but it also boasts the highest budget. They spent $80 million more than Casino Royale on the production budget- one of, if not THE, largest budget increases of the entire series.

I avoided Bolt since it was a non-Pixar Disney CG movie, but now with all this praise I think I'll go and check it out in 3D next weekend.

No one will know where Twilight is heading "at the end of the day" until the 3rd of 4th week. The Thanksgiving weekend is going to play havoc with predictions. Only a fool rules out it hitting $200M at this point because there is little precedent to go on to make a prediction. Which means that's just your gut talking and has Cusack says in High Fidelity your "gut has shit for brains."

The word of mouth on Quantum is terrible, in that it is very mediocre. Anyone who thinks that in a year of The Dark Knight that this thing was the best action film of the year has seriously confused a few decent gags with a good film.

Quantum is absolutely void of charm and a serious assault on the senses. Pure action, no Bond....Big letdown except for the money that it's raking in.......wish i had my money and my time back.

Wow. Stunned by the hate for Quantum. I only just saw it this afternoon and was blown away by it. And it's more than just action (though I too heard the predictable complaints of "There were too many action scenes" as I left the theater); it's all about the manner in which these scenes were integrated into the whole and used to explicate the underlying themes. The action has impact and means something. It does, admittedly, demand that one have a certain sensitivity for these nuances, inflected within a deceptively un-nuanced seeming film, but they are there for those thus attuned. Save for Speed Racer, this one is the finest and most daring mainstream commercial picture this year.

I'll give you SPEED RACER in that it's daring (not that its 'fine') -- and QUANTUM is the opposite of daring, the entire thing feels tired and uninspired...

Quantum of Solace was spectacular eye candy, but it was very stupid. It felt like I was watching a pretentious version of XXX. (The Rob Cohen crap, not the good kind of XXX movies). There was poor editing choices, a story that makes no sense and repeats every bit of dialogue (Oh, I'm sorry Judi Dench, do you not trust Bond again? I didn't get that. Good thing I got "Crash" Haggis on the case hammering a point home), and just a hollow, empty feeling as I leave the theater. And yeah, it's too Bourne-like. It's not a good sequel, it's not a good movie at all.

Except Jeffrey Wright. Dude OWNED his screen time. Finishing his beer in that scene, the man oozes cool.

But between the foot chase and the car chase, and the boat chase, and the plane chase, and the opera chase, and all the nonsense chases, when you strip it away you have a silly, stupid movie. It's a Simon West movie. And I bet you that upon second viewing, you'll see the flaws more, which is something that Casino Royale did in reverse.

And for the record, neither Dark Knight nor Quantum can claim best action movie, not in a year that bestowed upon us Rambo, good sirs.

(Death Race is second, because of the Dreadnaught. The Dreadnaught should be introduced into any movie to get things moving along. Think about the improovement it would have made out of Changeling!)

Supremely disappointing and mediocre can make a movie worse than just plain "bad". Death Race had no delusions about what it was. Quantum felt like a step back to the Brosnan Bonds.
