The ten biggest-grossing films of the year, two of which -- WALL*E and The Dark Knight -- were serious knockouts. A third -- Jon Favreau's Ironman -- was a very satisfying commercial fanboy flick. The other seven represented varying grades of muck and disappointment.

Only more proof the people of the world go to the movies to simply be entertained. Not to think. Not to learn lessons. Just to shut their brains off, forget about all the crap going on in the world.

"The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Odd that Disney ditched this property — pretty good earner for the Mouse House."
A 141 million domestic gross on a 200 million budget (pre-marketing) is a "pretty good earner"?

Those are the worldwide grosses. No way QoS made 500 million in the US.

Is that really the best link you could find featuring the 10 highest grossing films? Its profoundly irritating layout is trumped only by the 6th grade-level writing.

How far back would you have to go to find a top ten box office for the year where more than five of the movies were legitimately good?

Jeff, love ya 99.8 percent of the time, but using the words "muck and disappointment" to describe QUANTUM OF SOLACE? Seriously?
On the same list occupied by the (far more deserving) likes of MAMMA MIA! and SEX, I mean?

I find it interesting that two female-targeted films have made the top 10 (Sex and Mamma Mia). Last year there were none.

Prince Caspian was about as good as it could be given that it was adapted from the weakest book in the whole Narnia series, the plot of which is basically kids walking around in the woods until a swordfight happens, and then it's over.
The downer is that the next two books in the series have a lot of cinematic potential, and feature completely different settings and stories (based on the Odyssey and Orpheus, respectively, rather than Bible stories). It'll be a shame if the series has to stop here.

I love this idea that Americans go to the movies to "escape", as if the other 22 hours a day they're really rolling up their sleeves and dealing with some serious issues and working towards a better world.
Anyone who needs to "shut they're brain off" to go to the movies probably walks around like that all the time. Ignorant, illiterate, uninvolved, lazy, sedated.
Wall*E was the most prescient film this year, anyway.

It's understandable; have any of the Oscar Bait movies really impressed anyone that much? I've really had to struggle to love any of them, at least to the degree that I can see myself revisiting them over and over again for years to come.
They've been fine, but "fine" just doesn't cut it; I want to have that transcendent out-of-body experience a truly great film gives you, and it just hasn't happened this year.

I guess Gordo has never heard of the term "escapist fare," or failed to notice the list in question shows the top global earners. Because, as we all know, America is the only place in the world that has these new fangled things called "movie theatres."
