Can't Get No

If an Academy member or press person allows a watermarked screener in his/her possession to be pirated and is thereafter busted for this, we the people (a) want to know the name and profession of this person, partly so we can speculate on his/her idiocy levels or circumstance, and (b) want to see the perp severely punished. But no such satisfaction has come out of the Quantum of Solace screener situation, that was recently reported by Gold Derby's Tom O'Neil, and which involves a female Academy member.

We didn't need to hear any details back in '04 when former Academy member Carmine Caridi was popped for participating in the pirating of several screeners. It was all but impossible to avoid the implications of his last name. A guy who probably had Godfather and Goodfellas posters on his den wall, was possibly mobbed-up, maybe had a cousin who worked for a Tony Soprano type back in Jersey -- something along those lines. But we don't know zip about the errant female.

"A guy who probably had Godfather and Goodfellas posters on his den wall"

I suppose it's possible, since Carmine Caridi was Coppola's first choice to play Sonny, and he appeared in smaller roles in The Godfather II and III.

That said, drawing connections between that and his name is hardly cause to toss out some sort of mob connection to this thing. :P

He was sending the DVDs to a guy by the name of Sprague (not exactly Italian) in Illinois, whom (Carmine claims) was just a film buff and never paid him a dime for the DVDs.

There's a reason why judges exist - to gauge the level of punishment bases on all circumstances.

Even someone as unconnected to the film business as myself has himself the beneficiary of screeners over time and only someone not familiar with how these things get loaned out cannot see how innocently one could have been given to someone who decided to upload it. The implication in O'Neil's piece is that it was done gratis, which suggest a younger person.

I will ignore the truly ignorant Caridi comments.

Jeff,
It is just getting ridiculous now.
I live in the UK and went into work on Monday morning only for two of my friends to tell me they saw a DVD screener of Gran Torino on Sunday night.
The fact that it opened in six theaters in the whole of the States over the weekend and these guys watched it for nothing that same weekend across the pond beggars belief.

Who monitors these screeners? Name the the culprits and shame them.

I get the usual spiel from these guys too. "Oh I'll watch it at the cinema when it comes out" - yeah right, sure you will. Where's the will power? But I don't blame them so much as the policing of these screeners which seems non existent.

I wonder if O'Neil would have specified the gender of the alleged culprit if he guessed (and I'm presuming it's a guess seeing as he doesn't seem to have any hard evidence to back this allegation up) it was a male Academy member? As in, '' it was the DVD screener of a male Academy member ''.
I wonder.

All I know is when I was in college the parent of an acquaintance would give her daughter all of her Academy screeners to watch with friends. That's how I saw CHICAGO. They need to make these things have a short lifespan or something.
