Decline of Western Civilization

I was listening to a couple of 20-something DJ/talkshow guys on FM radio during yesterday's big drive. Movies were on the table, and one of them, sounding like a fairly well-educated GenYer, said that when he sees a black-and-white film on the tube he goes into an auto-pilot reception mode because in his head (and, he said, in the heads of a lot of his contemporaries, raised on visual intensity/CGI/video games/IMAX/3D) "all black and white movies are the same movie." My mouth fell open. I give up, I said to myself.

let me guess, is he some kind of a hipster douche-bag?

I really despise my generation (I just turned 26). I give up, too, Jeffrey. It disgusts me how many Americans have no appreciation for cinema or for fine arts. Oh yeah, I guess that makes us "ELITISTS"!!!

I had the same reaction when I was 10. Then I forced myself to sit down and watch a few B&W movies. It didn't take long for my perception to change.

The question is whether we should blame this asshole for not being open-minded enough to take some initative and see what's up before making up his mind, or our film culture for actively discouraging him to do so by relegating B&W to the ghetto of antiquity.

It's a matter of being used to or getting used to certain things. I'm 28 and never had problems with black & white per se, but I know that old films are not always an easy watch. In any case, that idiot has the same problem everyone has in my generation: it's all about "my opinion", the self self self, no right or wrong, just opinions, and everyone makes up their mind in two seconds about everything. It's stupid and it shows that there's not such thing as a "fairly educated person" around anymore.

I have to agree with p.Vice, B&W means old and that's not cool. At least that's what I get from my 20 year-old daughter. She'd rather watch something contemporary (anything made before she was born is old). Of course how can you trust someone who likes Britney Spears?

you guys are joking, right? I've been watching B/W films since I was a small child, growing up in India and northern England, but maybe that's because my parents loved old Indian films and encouraged me to watch many old movies.

when i was in high school, I loved watching old films. I wasn't into any new films that came out in the 90s. I hung out with other teens who shared a common interest in old movies.

I don't know about you people, but I have met plenty of teenagers and young adults who are very interested in old films, but maybe that's because I don't socialize with morons.

He at least deserves points for describing his malfunction in a fairly deft and articulate way. That almost sounds like a song lyric.

But, yeah, while I understand his flawed perspective, somebody needs to put him in the Ludivico chair and make him watch "Touch of Evil," "Rebecca," "Red River," "Breathless," "L'Eclisse" and "Citizen Kane" until he can tell one from the other.

i don't understand the surprise...back in the 70's, i worked in one of the only video rental stores in palm springs and after a long battle to get the owner to even stock b&w films, i was dismayed to find that no one would touch them.....and back then p.s. had a pretty old demo so it wasn't a generational thing......

That's somewhat embarrassing for me to hear, but it's the way that a lot of my contemporaries feel (I'm 27). Watching B&W is like pulling teeth for them - but mainly on principle. I am sure if they were given a few great films like Casablanca or Citizen Kane or To Kill a Mockingbird, they'd get over it (given half a chance).

Last night, I'm watching Yes Man, and someone down the row from me leans to his friend and says, "Who's Karl Marx?!" That to me is really, really pathetic.

I can sympathize with Mr Anonymous Millenial's viewpoint. My eyes tend to glaze over when I see B/W, which is unfortunate since movies were much more often far better made at that point in time than today.

Was visiting relatives in the Bronx in 1970. My 12-yr-old cousin was changing channels--this was when having a color TV was a big deal--and came across a Laurel and Hardy movie. He then tried to adjust the TV so the images would be in color.

This sort of thing always pisses me off. All the research shows that our generation is significantly more tolerant and intelligent than any to come before us. I suppose I should remind all of you how miserable of a job your generation has done. Global warming, a $10 trillion debt, economic recession, unnecessary wars, etc. You can't blame it all on the Republicans.

Please don't make sweeping generalizations about an entire age group based on one guy you heard on the radio. I could just as easily quote Bush and act as if most people your age are just like him.

"All the research shows that our generation is significantly more tolerant and intelligent than any to come before us."

LOL. How is that gauged? And perhaps we should check back in with similar stats for every single preceding generation in recorded history. At least, once again, dependent upon how that's ultimately meant to be meaningfully assessed.

Whatever the case, one thing is clear. This generation is untroubled by such unnecessary characteristics as humility. Who needs that when you have the all important absolutism of "tolerance"? However, we may want to reflect on the old Lemmiwinks episode of South Park and be awed by how prophetic its vision was. Indoctrinated tolerance was, in fact, never the goal. Social adjustment to force acceptance was. But, acceptance of only some--certain heretofore supposedly marginalized social groups--not ever all.

You might want to begin by reading Don Tapscott's book "Grown Up Digital." Perhaps then you might know what the hell you are talking about.

I would challenge any of you to provide one shred of evidence that proves any generalization you've made about people my age. Isn't it obvious that older people always criticize the young and that these criticisms almost always prove to be ridiculous?
