All These Wonderful Things blogger A.J. Schnack argues persuasively that James Marsh's Man on Wire should break free from its category (as many are suggesting WALL*E should rightfully do) and be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. Considering that it's the best-reviewed film of the year and all.

ooh i absolutely agree! especially in a year like this when none of the assumed best picture gang are exactly standing head and shoulders above the pack, and not because they're all knockouts

Does MAN ON WIRE deserve to be nominated for Best Picture? Absolutely. As of now, it's still my favorite movie of the year. Will it get nominated? Doubtful, unfortunately. Maybe things have changed in a decade or so, but I remember when HOOP DREAMS was pushed to be nominated for Best Picture (also in a year that was considered weak as far as film quality goes), and we all know what happened there.

If you don't believe that Wall-E should be allowed to break out of its specific category and join the big race, then you have to believe the same about Man on Wire. Can't have it both ways.
