With President-elect Barack Obama having nominated Colorado Senator Ken Salazar for Secretary of the Interior, a 12.19 Public Policy poll revealed that Democratic Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, cousin of film director George Hickenlooper and subject of a forthcoming GH mini-series called Hick Town, is a very strong contender against the top two potential GOP opponents. JH beats Bill Owens 54 to 40, and Tom Tacredo 54 to 37. So maybe he'll be appointed to fill Salazar's seat.

It is a funny picture. I had just finished filming with Obama for all of the three minutes he had before speaking to 100 thousand folks in Denver on October 26th. After I finished shooting a photographer was standing there and believe it or not Obama said " Let's get a picture." I wasn't even about to ask. I was so damn star struck and believe me I am never star struck. After the picture John cracked a joke to Obama (based on an earlier conversation I had with John) and then Obama mentioned the joke in his speech to 100 folks. It was really impressive. At that moment I realized, this guy isn't your typical robot politician. He actually listens. Anyway, the pic is funny. Obama looks cool. I look like I just drank fifteen cans of Jolt. As far as the interracial love thing, Anonymous, perhaps you didn't notice, but I'm already African American.

So about 4 or 5 years ago I'm at a film event in Denver and somebody hands me a New Belgium beer and I have a sip and make a pleased sound and turn to the guy next to me and say something about how hard it is in most American cities to find good, local American beers. And he asks where I'm from and I say Portland and we get talking about beer culture and he's asking me all kinds of questions about what's going on in the northwest: he's very knowledgeable on the subject, like deep technical knowledge and business news and people's names. And as we're chatting II introduce myself by my first name and he does the same and he asks why I'm at the event and I tell him I was there to present some films and talk about them and I ask him if he's a film buff or has something to do with the event. And he says, 'No, actually. I'm the mayor of Denver.' And I actually say out loud, "Yeah, right." And he laughs and says it's true and tells me that he knows so much about beer because he was the owner/operator of one of the city's first brewpubs (among other restaurants) before getting elected. He was very personable and down-to-earth guy and totally cool and didn't take umbrage at my sarcasm or embarrass me or anything. (Try to imagine telling, oh, Mike Bloomberg that he didn't seem to you like a mayor but rather like a tavernkeeper and see where you get....) Good egg, that Hickenlooper.
