Iraq's One-Shot Guevara

There's now a Facebook fansite for Muntadar al-Zaidi -- a.k.a., the Shoe- Thrower -- up and running. Obviously not his own as al-Zaidi has been in custody since the shoe-throwing incident last Sunday evening.

A Int'l Herald Tribune account recaps as follows: "At a news conference with Bush and Maliki on Sunday evening in Baghdad's Green Zone, Zaidi, a reporter for Al Baghdadia, a satellite television network, rose from his seat and threw one of his shoes at Bush's head. He shouted: 'This is a gift from the Iraqis. This is the farewell kiss, you dog!'

"Bush ducked and the shoe missed him. Zaidi then threw his other shoe, shouting, "This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq!" The shoe hit the wall behind Bush."

"Maythem al-Zaidi said that his brother is politically independent, but several people who know him mentioned that he was a Baathist who turned into a Sadrist after the war." --NY Times, 12/15/08

So he's belonged to two murderous, tribal political factions.

He can be your hero, but he sure isn't mine.

Are you going to link to the Sarah Palin church-burning game and the Facebook fansite of the arsonists once they're caught?

Seems to me that Muntadar al-Zaidi was expressing his right of free speech and politicial expression in the new Iraqi democracy.

Because throwing a shoe at someone's head and burning a church are equivalent. As much as I dislike Sarah Palin, she wasn't exactly responsible for the many deaths Bush is. A shoe thrown at his head was getting off easy.

"Are you going to link to the Sarah Palin church-burning game...?"

What a sad, terrifying world it will be for the K. Bowen's of the country for the next 8 years. Ever used to us/them, my side/your side view of their world, decades of being in the RW echochamber has made them tonedeaf to their own rhetoric.

34 days to go, wonder if K. will get more quiet or more strident as D-Day approaches...?

What a cosmic irony.....after 8 years of serving
as the most abysmal, incompetent and most
fundamentally un-American president...we finally see something Bush excels at.......

.......dodging shoes.flung at him.

I think the cosmic irony is that it so perfectly encapsulates Bush's presidency when you consider that at the beginning of the Iraq debacle you had (probably staged) images of Iraqis beating Saddam statues with shoes and now as Shrub is prepared to leave audience you have an Iraqis throwing one at him.

One that by ducking or not blocking, Bush allowed to hit an American flag displayed behind him. Now, if that isn't the Bush years in a nutshell, I don't know what is.

Yeesh. Seven years of dealing with "The Arab Street" and STILL people don't get it...

Everyone making this guy into some kind of youtube folk hero is going to be amazingly sorry probably no sooner than three months from now. I'd say 90-95% certainty of that.

It'll happen. This guy will pop up again, but this time connected to something genuinely despicable. Nature of the region, sadly. And when it does, all the fansites will look worse than foolish.

Just watch.

Just an example of MovieBob's Nostradamus-like prediction prowess from May 8, 2008:

"Obama can (and will) take the black vote and the white-college-kids vote by STUNNING margins and STILL lose. Neither group is a majority, AND they statistically don't vote in numbers even matching their own potential power. Hillary knows this. People who know politics know this.

If this breaks the way it's shaping up to, you will see something approaching - at least verbally - a minor "civil war" in this country the likes of which weren't seen since the O.J. verdict or Rodney King: Obama will win 90% of what will be called "the black vote" (though it'll more accurately be a black/hispanic/young bloc) and STILL lose 40+ states..."
