"I've been thinking a lot lately about Tom Brokaw's book The Greatest Generation, that classic about our parents and their incredible sacrifices during World War II," N.Y. Times columnist Thomas Friedman writes in today's edition. "What I've been thinking about actually is this: What book will our kids write about us? The Greediest Generation? The Complacent Generation? Or maybe: The Subprime Generation: How My Parents Bailed Themselves Out for Their Excesses by Charging It All on My Visa Card?
"In sum, our kids will remember the Obama stimulus as either the burden of their lifetime or the investment of their lifetime. Let's hope it's the latter. I like that book title much better." -- from a 12.7 column called "The Real Generation X."

How about "The terrible, self-centered generation who has done a lot of damage to the financial lives of those who belong to the next generation."

"The Generation that Finally Elected a Black President When Their Parents Couldn't Bring Themselves to Integrate the Armed Forces, Much Less the Rest of Society, in the Face of Total War Against Hitler and the Bombing of Pearl Harbor."
I understand where he's coming from, but there are strengths and weaknesses in every generation.
Unfortunately, white boomers, especially white middle-aged men, by themselves would not have elected Obama. It took a lot of push by younger voters, blacks, Hispanics, and women. Middle-aged white men (I'm one myself) are still a backwards-looking self-pitying bunch.

"The sell-outs who enabled 'separate but equal' race and class and lifestyle divisions; took away our ice caps through their SUVs; sacrificed our schools for corporate prisons for people who use and abuse drugs; and who traded our jobs to China and El Salvador in exchange for stock options and tax breaks."
nemo: Well, hell, racism is part of why that generation didn't even get immediately involved in the war in the first place, since they clearly didn't feel that sympathetic to Jews, if they were able to agree with Henry Ford so easily. And let's be honest here. Racism against people of Japanese descent was what fueled the war effort.
But that generation still did something noble for the world, when it could have easily bought into the "FDR knew about Pearl Harbor" meme. Boomers, on the other hand, were clearly not willing to give up their gas-guzzling cars or their tax dollars to universal health care and welfare-not to mention stem cell research.

Should have added "primarily for people who use and possess drugs, at the expense of violent crime like rape and murder".

Deez,and Nemo,
Why do liberals always bring racism into things that have nothing to do with it? It's like we could be talking about the Gingerbread Man's house always being eaten and you would say he's got it bad because he's brown. Live a little in the real world will you. Clearly by your post count here you spend 95% of your time on the internet. You clearly are not any smarter for it.

Please don't attempt to enlighten Nemo (the only good and noble middle aged white man on the planet) or DZ (racism everywhere I look!)
they are too much fun just as they are.
