I was delighted with the sharp, robust, extra-clean image quality of the Fox Home Video French Connection DVD that came out in February '05. William Friedkin's 1971 crime classic probably looked and sounded better than it ever had in Nixon-era theatres.

But it's not supposed to look too good. Too much attractiveness would take away from the raw-grit vibe that Owen Roizman's photography tried very hard to capture as he shot in various Manhattan, Brooklyn and other-borough locales. So I'm wondering what the point is going to be of the French Connection Blu-ray disc that'll be out on 2.24.09.

Not that I won't buy it -- I probably will, sucker than I am -- but I could think of many other Fox Home Video titles that I'd rather see on Blu-ray first.

I'm just not sold yet on how some of these gritty 70s pics are looknig on Blue Ray. Do they really need this treatment? I just don't know. I can appreciate it on something like 2001 (60s, yes), something out of this world, but a gritty pic, just not sure if it loses too much of the flavor.

IF the transfers are done right, (like say, Dirty Harry) 70s movies like this look very film-ish (more than dvd) and the griminess is better on blu-ray.

My biggest hangup with Blu-ray is how WB is so damn individualistic with their big book-sized cases. They're nice, but there should be a standard. It's irritating to have a few titles sticking out over the tops of the rest. It's like when they did that snap-case crap with DVD back in the day. Just conform.

I know this is off topic, but WTF. Here goes. Seeing greatmags post brought it to my mind. I watched "The Color Of Money" lastn ight. I had only seen it twice before. I nthe theater when it first came out and years ago on crappy VHS. As I watched it last night, I felt so sad to know Newman is dead. I mean in a profound way. I just miss knowing the guy was alive and kicking. I'm not one who worships movie stars but that guy had it in a bottle. I'm glad I'll always have his films but the guy was something special.

Count me in the "sucker" category. I've already sold my standard def DVD in anticipation of this release. Big Friedkin fan here. I am replacing SO many titles I swore I wouldn't when I entered the BR fray. I need help. Really.

Regarding how old films look on BR..I watched "The Wild Bunch" last night. If that image is wrong I don't want to be right. Wow.

The point of this Blu-ray release, just like every other Blu-ray release, is to allow us to see the film as close to the theatrical presentation as possible. There should never be a complaint for that. Since there are no time machines that will take us back to when these great films premiered in theaters, Blu-ray will have to do.
