Mammoth

Lukas Moodysson's Mammoth is a Manhattan-based yuppie-values drama that also involves time spent in Thailand by the husband character, played by Gael Garcia Bernal. (With a little tsunami action?) The wife/mother is played by Michelle Williams. Pic will screen in the main competition at the Berlin International Film Festival 2009. This European TV clip contains a longish trailer for the film.

AGI and AMROES/BABEL comparisons aside, let's just hope this is TOGETHER or Lilya 4-Ever Moodyson and not A HOLE IN MY HEART or CONTAINER Moodyson. He has the worst batting average of any great filmmaker currently working. It's really great to see Michelle Williams coming into her own, regardless of the tragedy, but that does make it extra special.

Lars Jönsson, who's produced most of Moodysons stuff and is generally regarded as the most powerful guy in Swedish film, said that the screenplay for Mammoth was the best he'd read in over a decade. Film was just picked out for the main competition in Berlin.

And, hell, Burma, I'm a big fan of Moodysson but not even I saw A Hole In My Heart. Kudos.

I just hope this does enough business to prompt a U.S. DVD release for Moodysson's LILJA 4-EVER -- aside from a barebones Netflix exclusive, there is still no R1 release for this outstanding film.

Amen to what BurmaShave says. I think Together is probably in my top three all-time favorite movies; it's like opening a vein on the memories of my childhood (though I certainly didn't grow up in a tiny Swedish commune). And Lily-4-ever is just plain harrowing. Holy crap, what a depressing, yet beautifully made film. I finally got tired of waiting for the thing to come out here on DVD and ordered a region 2 DVD from Amazon UK. You can, of course, now watch it instantly using the Netflix thing on Xbox and Tivo...

But Jesus, Hole in my Heart was almost unwatchable. And I have never seen container...

Either way, the guy's a genius and I certainly have high hopes for this thing...
