Jeff, seriously. Love your column, but this is a basic Storytelling 101 thing. If you want people to love and stick to your blog, DON'T GIVE AWAY PUNCHLINES AND ENDINGS. so goddamn easy.

In 1967 in was in high school. Ed O'Keeffe and I went to the Baronet theatre on 59th and 3rd to see "The Graduate." Afterwards, we were in a coffee shop reading that week's Newsweek article about Hoffman and the film; the article mentioned that he lived in Manhattan.
We went to a phone booth and looked him up in the white pages. There it was: "Hoffman Dustin 44 W 14th St." Being typical NYC high school fresh pricks, we decided to pay him a visit, so we got on the subway and went downtown.
The door to the building was open; we found his name on the mailbox; we knocked on his apartment door. He opened the door... I guess we expected some kind of "what-the-fuck-do-you-kids-want" response, but no. We told him we'd just seen his picture, he let us in, talked to us for a couple of minutes, signed the article in Newsweek, and we left.
Nice guy, just like the guy in the clip. I still have the signed article... personalized, even.
