Numbers

The Day The Earth Stood Still, which opens wide tomorrow, is running at 81, 48 and 25 -- decent to pretty good business. Big Hollywood's Steve Mason foresees $36 million as of Sunday night, but says in the same breath that $100 million domestic is unlikely.

Delgo, which no one knows or cares about, is at 24, 22 and 0. And Nothing Like the Holidays is 52, 30 and 5...modest business.

On 12.19 we'll see the opening of Gabriele Muccino and Will Smith 's Seven Pounds, which is now running at 71, 49 and 8 -- kinda low for a Smith movie. Its strongest (and perhaps stronger) competitor is Jim Carrey's Yes Man , which is at 79,39 and 8 -- except that a comedy is always an easier sell than a drama. Universal's animated The Tale of Despereaux is running at 56, 29 and 2.

On 12.25 comes Bedtime Stories - 71, 38 and 5. Marley and Me is 76, 35 and 6. Spirit is 43, 34 and 3. Valkyrie is 65, 38 and 6.

The reason Valkyrie is coming out before 12.31, I'm told, is because MGM's pay TV deal expires with Showtime expires at the end of this year, and they've got a less well-paying pay TV deal starting next year. They're MGM and they don't have any clout any more, nobody's giving them any new money but they need to generate money now.

Yes Man looks awful.

Bedtime Stories looks painfully bad.

TDTEST looks weak and bland.

Delgo...what the fuck is Delgo?

I hope Tale of Desperaux flops. I used to work for Gary Ross and his tool wife. It looks like a cute kids movie but it was an embarassment how they treated Sylvain Chomet during development.

Seven Pounds...I don't know...feeling indifferent about it at the moment...

I lost interest in The Spirit when I saw the PG-13 rating.

Marley and Me. From the director of The Devil Wears Prada. No thanks.

And as much as I'm interested in seeing Valkyrie, it's gonna tank. Big time.

Well i just came back from watching The Day The Earth Stood Still, i wasn't expecting anything from it at all going in but it managed to be even worse than i expected. Truely awful, wooden acting all round, bad effects, woeful.

From the comments i overheard from most of the crowd after there will be very bad word of mouth on this, most seemed bored and angry that Gort didn't have a rampage around NY Godzilla style

YES MAN trailer's actually been playing pretty well during all the big films I've seen this fall. After it was done during my QUANTUM showing in Toledo, some woman exclaimed "Oh I just love him! So funny". The beginnings of a Carrey comeback perhaps.

I'm still trying to figure what the hell happened to Carrey's box office luster. On his name alone, BRUCE ALMIGHTY made $250M and a year later he had ETERNAL SUNSHINE. I know LEMONY SNICKET was somewhat of a B.O. disappointment but it wasn't a bad film. Yeah, DICK AND JANE was bad but it still made $100M and God himself (Will Smith) wouldn't have made THE NUMBER 23 any real money.

Thanks for the numbers Jeff!

TDTESS is tracking right at where 10KBC was in March, so with Reeves, the older fan base, and the Sci Fi theme it will easily exceed 10KBC's $36M, and judging by I Am Legend this could go as high as $50M but almost definitely no higher.

Every time I see the Valkyrie trailer, I'm reminded of Kevin Costner playing Robin Hood. Where is Cruise's German accent? Guess some stars can do accents ( Russell Crowe for instance) and some can't.

What about BENJAMIN BUTTON, I thought that one is opening wide 12/25th as well?

great scott, I ask you in all sincerity, on behalf of all mankind, why would someone speaking English in a German accent make any sense? He should either speak German, or unaffected English. Anything else would make as much sense as a Mexican film about FDR having people speak Spanish in an American accent.

Kevin Costner always gets a bad rap about "Robin Hood" but I read that they started shooting the film with the accent, then decided to drop it, but for some reason didn't loop the earlier footage.
