NYFCC Hearts Milk

The New York Film Critics Circle has just handed Gus Van Sant's Milk its Best Picture award. This obviously firms things up big-time for the Focus Features release, and makes it look right now like the only Best Picture contender with the energy, muscle and the staying-power to overtake Slumdog Millionaire. Here's a rundown of the other NYFCC awards.

Why did they give Milk best picture, but not best director? Haven't seen Happy-Go-Lucky yet, but I'd be shocked if it was better directed than Milk, a director's showcase if ever there was one.

I really like Milk. It's hovering around my top ten. But ... they choose Milk as Best Picture and then choose 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days as Best Foreign and Man on Wire as Best Doc ..... that's two films right there that are better than Milk.

I think 'Milk' is a very good biopic -- it might make my Top 10, might not -- it's really solid, and Penn is great.

But if this wins 'Best Picture' it will be extremely underwhelming -- not an abomination of 'Crash' or 'Greatest Show on Earth' proportions at all, just a little, "this is all we've got this year"?

actionman - see them in that order.

I, in fact, had to make a decision between the two and went with Milk, which was a mistake. Sure, it has the performance that will probably win this year, but the film itself is shockingly unaffecting. Which should have been no surprise - Van Sant just isn't a director who brings home the emotional wallop of a story. He has always been too detached.

Hence, there's a reason why he isn't getting the director nod here.

Deathtongue, maybe for personal reasons, but I was quite walloped by GOOD WILL HUNTING and while it failed FINDING FORRESTER is a straight sentimental uplift movie. But you're right, he's been pretty austere for awhile.

I have been a big, big fan of Van Sant's recent work (Elephant, Gerry, Last Days, Paranoid Park) but was not a big fan of Good Will Hunting. I found Finding Forrester to be extremely trite and way to sappy. Van Sant has become such a stylist with his last few pictures that it will be interesting to see him move into the more conventional biopic mold.

Hmm... NYFCC adds Zacherek to their roster this year and they choose the weakest film they've lauded since the '80s... this organization is immediately put on double-secret probation.

For what it's worth, I thought Milk was hugely emotionally affecting. Not detached at all.

Why all the sudden hate for Slumdog? Sorry, but it's still going to win Best Picture...no matter what any critical group says...the Academy votes for the Oscars not the critics.
