The boys and I were standing in front of the Eiffel Tower nine years ago this evening, as '99 gave way to '00. This was easily the most dazzling New Year's Eve fireworks display of my life. It began three minutes before midnight ("Wait...it's only 11:57...who cares!") and continued to erupt like some Krakatoa volcano three minutes after.
The metro shut down an hour later and tens of thousands had to walk home. It took us the better part of two hours to get back to our Montmartre studio, but the spectacle of it it all was partly Jacques Tati and partly Cecil D. DeMille, like some inebriated exodus out of Egypt, moonlit multitudes flooding the streets and sidewalks...amazing.

I'd like to wish a happy new year to myself because I'm the only one here. The bottle of Martinelli's Sparkling Apple Cider is empty. I used it to wash down an extra large slice of red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. Finally watched Man on Wire. Wasn't as good as everyone made it out to be. Incredible feet, so-so documentary about the feet. I thought the editing was slack. I don't want to watch ten minutes of Phil and Jean Louis tumbling through the tall grass. And a lot of things, the wrong things, were left unexplained, like what happened with Phil and Jean Louis afterwards and where did Phil get all of this money to travel and plan without having any significant source of income? I had a hard time giving a shit about this guy and what he did, although when the moment came. it was mind-boggling to see a man standing on a wire 1000 feet in the air. Jesus Christ am I boring the shit out of myself. But that doesn't mean I don't have some predictions for the upcoming year. This is the year we see men wearing lots and lots of red. Paramus, NJ will finally be known as the tongue piercing capital of America. Someone will make a Spaghetti Carbonara so disgusting that news of it will travel outside of the family who ate it. Endless Boogie will play a Bar Mitzvah. Steven Spielberg will smoke a joint for the first time since 1985 and call a meeting with D.J. Caruso so they can discuss a sequel to Carbon Copy, with George Segal and Denzel Washington reprising their roles as father and son, and. listen to this, D.J., this is fucking genius, Denzel is the Mayor of Los Angeles, and he's involved in some kind of scandal, investment banking or hedge funds or something like that, and he goes to visit his dad in San Marino, except San Marino is like not such a nice place to live anymore, there are gangs and drugs, and Denzel tried to clean the neighborhood up, which gets George shot, and then who knows what happens after that, D.J. will think of something. He always does.

MM: In the film, his gf says that thye broke up shortly after the ETC walk. Doesn't matter why. They grew apart like most couples do. As for how the guy financed it, I'm curious as well. Frankly, I bet his family has serious coin. Unless street performers make more than they do.
I loved the film. The hype didn't bother me at all. In this case, it was warranted. Hype never matters except when it is overblown (Milk, RR, etc.).
The rest of your post is awesome. First classic of the new year!!!

MM- I know you are baiting me with your pretend anti-Man on Wire shtick. I will ignore it and instead chide Mindless for falling into your trap. Now, I hope you will have to go to great lengths to convince him or her that you are actually being serious about MoW, and he or she will of course not believe you, now worrying about walking into more MilkMan hijinks.

I lived in Paris for about five months, and used to walk home late at night all the time after the Metro had closed (I'm against taxis on principle). Not as big as you'd think. I lived in Montmartre, near the Pigalle stop, and used to walk all the way from the Bastille district, Republique, the left bank, etc. Compared to most major cities, I don't even remember having to pass through any sketchy areas.
