Kenneth Lonergan's Margaret was shot a couple of years ago but won't be out until sometime in '09. All sorts of legal problems have be-deviled it, I'm told. There was a really long cut. I guess that means what it means, but how could the guy who directed and wrote the straight and truthful You Can Count On Me mess things up so badly that Margaret hasn't been shown to anyone I know, hasn't been shown or booked at any festivals and Fox Searchlight hasn't even assigned an '09 release date?

'You Can Count On Me' is a masterpiece...I was so excited that such a major new talent had arrived, and that was about a decade ago and he hasn't made a movie sense. A real shame. 'Margaret' shot so long ago that it seems like he would be on to the next thing by now...

"You Can Count On Me" is in my top-ten of anything that's happened in the 21st century. Sorry to hear about "Margaret." "Legal problems"? That sucks. Wonder what it means.

Mess it up? That a studio won't release a movie is often a sign that the movie is something original and different and the distributor is at a loss as to what to do with it. Probably they've been fighting over trying to make the cut more commercial. And very likely they'll have destroyed it in the process.
Or maybe Lonergan messed it up, who knows.

For what it's worth, I read this script a while back and I'd say it's good, but in a very low key way. It touches on big issues, but still feels somewhat slight (on the page anyway). However, the big problem in my opinion -- and probably the reason the whole thing got derailed -- is the part played by Lonergan's wife. Almost all of her scenes seem tacked-on and unnecessary, but I'm sure they're the last ones Lonergan wanted to cut. As far as I'm concerned, the script could have really delivered if they just scrapped 70% of the mother scenes (particularly the ones involving her and the man she's dating). They distract from what the movie's really about, rather than enforce it.

This is sad. I really liked You Can Count on Me. I had been wondering when this would be in theatres.....looks like I'm left wondering.

You Can Count on Me makes me cry every time I watch it, and in different moments upon each new viewing it seems. So many perfect moments...
It is one of the funniest sad movies made in the last twenty years, no?
