Can anyone imagine any half-savvy online journalist or news site running a December 2008 story titled "VHS Era Is Winding Down"? I can't. At the same time I shrugged when I read Geoff Bouncher's story with this title in the 12.22 L.A. Times because this is the kind of "duhh" story that the LAT sometimes likes to run. It's about a low-rent, bottom of the barrel VHS distributor named Ryan J. Kugler who's finally decided to pack it in as far as this format is concerned. Whatever. It's the Be Kind Rewind of video-format trend stories.

That video is a joke. How is that guy going to get $10 for Friends on VHS when I tried to sell my Season 1 DVD and couldn't get anyone to give me $5?
Also, DVD will never really be "obselete" like VHS because you can still play it on your Blu-ray player, which makes it look better than ever. It's still a round disc of an approximate size.
The only thing that will kill disc-based formats is digital distribution, but it will take a while. It took me a long time to get over not having the CD cover art and such, but once I did, I sold every CD I could. Now I would never buy another physical copy.

yeah, I'm shocked that people still sell VHS (or even play it) here in America.
somewhere in poorer parts of the world, yes, I am sure that people still use VHS tape players, but come on... in America?
i like DVDs but i never got around to checking out Blu-Ray. I'll stick to DVDS, I'm not interested in starting all over with a whole new collection again.

"poorer parts of the world"
Some of you really lived sheltered lives.
It's ironic that sitting above this post is the Pinter one that praises his "precise" language because having read the article, the wording of "It's about a low-rent, bottom of the barrel VHS distributor..." has to be just about the sloppiest writing Jeff has done since probably he was a pup journalist.
Literally true, yes, but usage of such language suggests something that it isn't there. For anyone in business, the story was yet a great example of not only knowing exactly what your market is but also when to finally get out.

I thought the article was quite good. Aside from the last shipment happening in October (when the story should've ran) this was a nice closure to the final Christmas where VHS stood as having any sort of relevant shelf space.
Personally, I still have lots of VHS, mostly of movies I haven't seen that aren't available on DVD, but that hasn't stopped me from slowly watching them and selling them to a local second hand story. Granted, the format is awful (and I say this as I watch The Police in concert on my Blu Ray player), but it's still the only option for many films.
It's dead, but I'm taking its wallet.
