I was too lazy to respond to Roger Friedman's 12.22 item about Speed-the-Plow costar Raul Esparza addressing a Sunday-matinee audience about the departed, sushi-afflicted, mercury-poisoned Jeremy Piven...so here it is 24 hours late.
The puzzler for me wasn't Esparza (whose performance was more off-the-wall manic than Piven's when I caught a performance in late November) saying "today was the first time I really enjoyed playing this show" and "I hope you weren't expecting a big TV star." The puzzler was about how costar Elizabeth Moss allegedly "sobbed" while Esparza was dissing Piven, presumably out of sympathy. Why? Who sobs for a spoiled temperamental weenie ? What kind of value system does Wilson live and feel by?

Agreed.
Ya know, Piven should have taken a lesson from Madonna. When she did that play years ago, she hated it. She couldn't wait for her run to be over so she could escape it, and she told everyone that. She even mentioned it on Dave Letterman's old show during an appearance with Sandra Bernhard. But she didn't quit. She soldiered through her scheduled run and met her contractual obligations
Today we have prima donnas like Piven or J.D. Drew skipping out on their contracts for supposedly greener pastures. They should take a lesson from the real professionals.

I saw the show on Sat. It was fantastic. Nobody trashed Hollywood like Mamet. Esparza was great. We all said at the end that if Piven had been in the show, it would've been a distraction considering how good he is at playing Ari Gold. The character he was playing in Speed the Plow was in no way, shape, or form Ari Gold but the Hollywood connection would still be there. Jordan Lage, the understudy who has been filling in, was very strong. And I love Moss. Her work on Mad Men is incredible and it was a blast to see her in person.

Did Moss really "sob?" I find that hard to believe. the woman is a professional and a GREAT actress. I find it hard she'd do that over some tool like the Piv. FYI to Wells: This story is as over as it was dumb to begin with. NEXT!!!

ha-ha, Vice. The show is the still the show -- it's great writing and extremely entertaining. And if you think the inner workings of Hollywood are a pit of despair as I do, then it's the show for you.
I was simply pissed that I had spent a lot of money on a show based in part on a particular actor's involvement. The fact that the play would have suffered from Piven's involvment was a nice surprise to learn; I'm glad he wasn't in the show I got a chance to see.
But thanks for you concern, buddy. Happy Holidays.

Ray, I take it you're a Dodger fan? Comparing what Piven did to Drew leaving the Dodgers makes no sense. Drew fairly negotiated an out clause in his contract and left for a better-paying job, just like you probably would. The example you should have used, of course, went in the reverse direction, Boston to L.A., and the Piven comparison is actually pretty apt - Manny Ramirez. Couple of clueless douchebags.

I saw Sunday's performance. Moss wasn't sobbing, but she was clearly emotional. Esparza is a straight-from-the-heart kind of guy (and a terrific actor) and I liked what he had to say. He, Moss (also great), and understudy Jordan Lage put on quite a show, and they felt like a closely knit ensemble after just a couple of days.
If you're in NY, go see it. Eighty fast-paced minutes. Norbert Leo Butz, who is Esparza's contemporary and a kindred spirit acting-wise, starts tonight and should be sensational. William H. Macy takes over sometime in January but is too old for the part, I'd say. I think Lage should be allowed to finish out the run.

Oh, and it's Elisabeth Moss. Not Elizabeth Wilson, who at 87 is a mite creaky for the role, except opposite Macy.

Elizabeth Moss is a good actor-- I've first noticed her in the remake of "Escape to Witch Mountain" on ABC Family back in the 90s. heh.

I've been reading these posts for a few days now, and I'm trying to find a reason for all of this... None of you know Piven and his medical condition, but you are all so sure it's sickening. And now this, why did Moss cry? Good question, here's another - why are you so angry? I'm guessing it has something to do with boredom and lack of judgement. Internet posters tend to do that, it doesn't really mean anything.

@ Breedlove - Nah, I'm not going to give Drew any credit. I watched his sorry ass in St. Louis as he whined and declined to play in order to get himself traded to a different team. The guy has a cunt where God meant his dick to be.

Piven, allegedly at death's door, got on the first flight out of NY when he quit. Mamet would not have joked about his condition had there in fact been something there. It's embarrassing. His departure put the show in jeopardy. Now, if he up and dies, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

You're right, the fact that Mamet told a joke at his expense and that he was able to fly clearly proves something about his health, you're very observant.
What was it about this story that brougt out the mysoginist in some of you here? Is it because Piven's character does it on TV and it's so funny you want in on the fun?

Piven was excrutiatingly rude to me recently at Rose Bar. I think he was trying to impress his two young damsels who looked bored out of their skulls. I wished him a good evening and regretted not telling him he lived up to his reputation.

The show's weekly gross dropped $160,000 after he left. Piven, whose theater-founding dad must be rolling in his grave at his son's disgrace, should write the producers a check before he expires from mercury poisoning, a disease harmful to children...but not child-men.
