Benjamin Gump

A lot of people said "Gump!" when Benjamin Button was first screened. This video is for those astute minds who initially waved the comparison off.

Meh...I still wave it off. They may be similar stories, but it goes with the territory...there are certain beats that a movie is just expected to hit in these kinds of pictures where an individual's life is followed from life to death, spanning many eras.

Plus, the potential of editing is so strong that you can pretty successfully equate just about any two things visually. Just ask Eisenstein.

Still, this was amusing for what it was worth.

Button is Gump with brains, and without the right-wing '60s-bashing.

Writers often revisit the same themes and the same archetypes in their stories. Woody Allen has been making the same movie for decades. Who cares.

I still can't believe they made Button's best friend a goddamn boat captain. It's like they were begging for the comparison.

I see the online smear against Benjamin Button continues in earnest. I'm so glad you're helping to spread these smears Jeffrey. It's not like this isn't going on elsewhere.

The Forrest Gump comparison is so superficial. Okay, so a guy loves a girl and at one point works on a boat. Obviously this is Forrest Gump, right? I mean a guy, loving a girl? No other film but The Gump ever featured such an outlandish premise. Please. This is so flimsy that if Roth hadn't written the story, no one would be making the comparison at all.

This video just reeks of an online smear. It reminds me of the Swift Boat stuff from 2004. I can't believe how serious and pathetic some people are about winning Oscars. Anyone willing to venture a guess of who may be behind it?

Wow, so you compare humorous criticism of a movie with spreading lies about someone's war service, and then you complain about other people taking things too seriously? Stop not making sense.

Not to nitpick, but Gump was set in Alabama, not Louisiana and the accent Hanks uses is Southern, not necessarily New Orleans...read Confederacy of Dunces to understand how many New Orleanians talk..more like Bronx/Brooklyn than the stereotypical Southern accent.

Still, a funny video. And yes, many filmmakers remake their own films or make the same film over and over again...Hitchcock anyone? How many times did he do the "wrong man" theme in his films?

One thing we know for sure, it won't be Aniston. I don't even think they let her present at the Oscars, let alone win anything.

Couldn't be worse than that time they picked an actress who made out with her brother and engaged in a blood oath with Billy Bob Thornton. What was her name again?

Angelina Jolie. And as an actress, Aniston isn't fit to be in the same room as her.

Aniston clearly isn't up to snuff in the bedroom, either. Which is why Pitt left her for Jolie.

But really, as normal nothing you mentioned was relevant to what I said. Aniston has never been nominated, never will be nominated, and probably hasn't even presented at the Oscars.

She's the loser dude. No wonder you seem to like her so much.

That botox and collagen combo really makes me hot, too.

True, because Jolie's b-movies are so much more respectable than Aniston's work.

Yeah, those are bad. Just barely better than The Object of my Affection, Rumor Has It, and Along Came Polly.

Something we finally agree on. I'm no huge fan of Jolie, but she's the far superior actress and has a far superior film resume.

Just better than those stinkers. The best CG in the world couldn't save Rumor Has It or Along Came Polly.

No studio would even give Aniston a chance at an action franchise. She's a romantic comedy girl, and nothing more. She's Kate Hudson.

DZ,

Defend this film resume. Without bringing other actors into it, defend this.

Marley and Me is a hit, but I chalk that up to a family film at Christmas time. And it's roughly at 60% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Marley and Me
Management
The Break-Up
Friends with Money
Rumor Has It...
Derailed
Along Came Polly
Bruce Almighty
The Good Girl
Rock Star
The Iron Giant
Office Space
The Object of My Affection
The Thin Pink Line
'Til There Was You
Picture Perfect
She's the One
Dream for an Insomniac

A few solid movies (Office Space, Iron Giant, The Good Girl, The Break Up). She was a co-lead in two of them, a voice in another, and the girlfriend role in another. Only one of them was a hit.

Other than that, when she's been the lead it's been in a forgettable romantic comedy.

the rest of the time she's simply the girlfriend role (Bruce Almighty, Rock Star)

She works mostly for subpar, or unknown directors.

Defend it. I can't wait to hear the DZ logic.

Jonah: "The best CG in the world couldn't save Rumor Has It or Along Came Polly."

Well, the best CG couldn't save Alexander, either. But that's not stoppin' you from pretending Jolie's actually good at picking roles.

"No studio would even give Aniston a chance at an action franchise. She's a romantic comedy girl, and nothing more. She's Kate Hudson."

Um, Hudson did Four Feathers and Skeleton Key while Aniston did Derailed. Can Jolie do a non-"chicks with guns" flick which doesn't involve her hogging the camera?

"True, especially not Picture Perfect."

How about Shark Tale?

"Defend it."

Well, it's true Aniston doesn't always go for the risky choices. But she's clearly not oblivious to the quality projects out there, either. So I imagine she takes on those rom-com flicks to make her fans feel more comfortable with the off-kilter stuff. If she just automatically goes for the serious material, then there are higher expectations of her new "image". But by channeling her familiar persona into a more developed part down the road, she can show more depth than if she tried to wing it. After all, how many low-brow flicks did Jim Carrey do before people took him seriously as an actor?

Jolie, though, mostly goes for whatever film allows her to be the center of attention. She's not willing to expand her range beyond her Oscar-bait/warrior princess persona. She doesn't make you think of "Everyday Girl", either; and if she were in Office Space or even "The Break-Up" instead of Aniston, you'd find it totally hard to relate to her. Hell, even in "The Changeling" and "A Mighty Heart", she looks like an actress dressed up for a part, rather than an actress who became the part.
