One Sundance film I should have included on my final shortlist is Nicolas Winding Refn's Bronson. Journalist Bilge Ebiri yesterday spoke of "a bunch of New York journos" having seen an early screening of the bio-prison pic and gone "ape-shit."
And for what it's worth, a fellow with a certain professional interest in Bronson has written the following: "It's a directorial wow from Refn and it has a Best Actor Oscar-worthy performance by Tom Hardy. I'm not kidding about Hardy's work. It's a total 'who is that?' performance which is right up there on my very short all-time list with David Thewlis in Naked and Hillary Swank in Boys Don't Cry. Please do not miss it.
" And there's something that's not getting across anywhere, by the way -- the film is very, very funny."

An English "Chopper" is the first thing that comes to mind. I'm there with bells on.

Great. Another film-festival darling that looks really good . . . that we won't get to see for at least a year. Thanks for that.
The movie industry really needs to change its paradigm.
As an aside, how many spoilers do you think Jeffrey can pump out between Sundance and its release to the public? "I drink your milkshake" anyone?

Definite Chopper vibe. The guy also reminds me a little of Daniel Day Lewis.

Wow. Tom Hardy is the guy who played Picard's albino clone in Star Trek: Nemesis. Never would have guessed.

And there I was getting all excited because I thought it was a Charles Bronson biopic.

Reminds me of Guy Ritchie films, back when he was making good ones. Guy Ritchie makes Clockwork Orange. Looking forward to it.

I am in love with this performance already. And yeah, Tom Hardy has come a long way from NEMESIS.

I'm so there, I'm already there.
At my video store, I often take CHOPPER off the "Drama" shelf and sneak it into the "Staff recommendations" (which are usually shit) shelf.

I did a Google search on the real "Charlie Bronson." The guy is pretty far out there.

I was looking at some of Charlie's books on Amazon. The workout book that teaches you penis enlargement and anal clenching sounds like a winner.
That's a shame about McGoohan. I just saw him on the Dr. Syn DVD and he still looked pretty good. Still love The Prisoner.

Long-time lurker, first-time poster.
I saw this at the London Film Festival and loathed it (worst film I saw at the fest - the best two were Che and Kore-Eda's "Still Walking". It starts well - any film that starts with the Walker Bros' The Electrician on the soundtrack has instantly won a lot of goodwill from me. But the next hour or so is horrible, with every conceivable stylistic affectation piled on like whipped cream on dogshit cake to cover up for the poverty of real narrative imagination and the lack of any sense of what the film is supposed to be about.
It settles down after a while, and the last half hour or so is rather good and Tom Hardy's performance is uncanny and fearless. But from Nicholas Winding Refn, this counts as a major disappointment.

Hardy and Matt King were also both in RocknRolla - and Matt King is amazing in everything he does (em.. Inkheart aside). Check out Peepshow , a British comedy that airs in the UK.
More importantly, check out Hardy in Stuart: A Life Backwards , which also aired on British TV and I'm not sure how anyone would get their hands on it outside of the UK.Iit's one of the most amazing performances I've ever seen. Benedict Cumberbatch ( Atonement and Starter For Ten ) plays alongside him.
