"I didn't see you at the [today's] Moon screening," a distribution guy wrote me just now. "If you weren't, you missed the first breakout hit of the festival.
"It's a sensational piece of indie sci-fi with cult potential. Brilliantly conceived. A superb performance by Sam Rockwell -- award-worthy in fact.
"The only problem is that there's a big twist about 45 minutes in that would be criminal to reveal. I hope respectful critics like yourself won't spoil it! Definitely one to make sure you see.
"I believe Sony Classics has the rights for the US, England and Australia, although I don't know if
that's public knowledge yet. If it isn't you didn't get it from me."

I read about this a month or so back and was wondering what the deal was. Sounded so odd. A cheap little indie set on the moon...very interesting. Directed by David Bowie's kid, apparently.

Ready, Set...HYPE!
You wanna watch a cheap sci-fi indie that rocks? Rent the American Astronaut. That's an actual independent film.
Strange, though. I was just listening to Cracked Actor on my iPod, like sixty seconds ago.
Sam Rockwell is my cinematic Kryptonite. If I see him in a movie I start to get sick. That dude grinds the gears so hard when he's acting that he makes Philip Seymour Hoffman look Bressonian.

Also: I know this isn't movie related, but if you like the idea of someone being isolated/stranded on the moon, then you should check out the new Acme Novelty Library No. 19. Chris Ware spins a tale an astronaut stranded on Mars that is absolutely the strangest thing he has done so far.

The problem about the twist though is that I think the twist is one of the selling points of the film and what makes Rockwell's performance really incredible.

Rockwell certainly didn't know this was a big twist back in September when he was doing interviews for Choke. He told me the whole plot of the film.

I'm just being a jerk. This movie actually sounds like it might be pretty cool. I just get jealous sometimes. I wish David Bowie was my dad. It would've been nice.
One thing I'm getting tired of is the whole This-Plot-Twist-Is-Too-Incredible-To-Give-Away brand of publicity. It denigrates the rest of the film. If a movie can be ruined by a plot twist revelation then it's not a very good movie. That's my opinion. Don't reduce the movie to a gimmick because that's how it will be remembered. I haven't seen Moon but I'm guessing that Rockwell is replaced with a clone of himself. Why is that such a big deal? If I knew that, if that's what the movie was about and that's how they advertised it, that's what would make me want to see it. It seems like too many movie these days have a Don't Tell policy. It's getting silly.

Rockwell is Keyser Soze?
Any mention of Rockwell and sci-fi brings up awful memories of his performance in The Hitch-hiker's guide to the galaxy. The adaptation was crap anyway, but he sank it to an even lower level.

An American using the expression "a wank" is the very definition of "a wank." At least he didn't write "a bit of a wank."
