I drove through and around the New Jersey neighborhoods of my youth yesterday -- Westfield, Clark, Rahway, Mountainside -- and was mildly taken aback by the Christmas decorations still up everywhere. It was two days after the dawn of '09 -- time to take down the tree, put away the tree lights, grim up and get back to work -- but New Jerseyans were hanging tough with the mistletoe and the candles in the windows and the sugarplum fairies, etc.

That's as it always has been. Kids are still off from school (for one more day anyway). Wait till vacations over. Or maybe wait for a day above freezing at least. Scrooge.

What Gordie said. Normally these things come down when the vacation ends and I ain't nowhere near Jersey, yo. You can set your watch by Wells' Scroogeosity.

That "private" school the Republicans were complaining about Chelsea attending has a fairly ghetto exterior. If they're going to charge parents out of pocket to go there, at least keep up with the paint job.

We don't de-Christmas till after Three Kings Day (Jan. 6), a tradition my wife, who grew up in Puerto Rico, observes. Most non-Hispanics will get to it today or tomorrow.

The Christmas season in most Christian calendars extends all the way to the Feast of the Epiphany on Jan. 6th, so they're within their rights to keep their tinsel up.
It would appear many of the neighborhoods you visited are following the lead of legendary Wellsville, New Jersey residents Pete and Pete Wrigley: "The tree stays, fungus-lick!"

It's always interesting to observe those who observe the world from only their own perspective apparently without the imagination to consider others'. As a married person, I constantly chuckle when I'm online reading posts clearly written by single people.
We had family here until New Years Day. Yesterday was the first day the wife and I had to ourselves since before Christmas, so you will excuse us if didn't get the decorations down according to the Wellsian timetable. Like every other family we know, today and tomorrow are this year's official de-decoration days.
Not to mention, even without excuse, the tree this year was exceptionally nice (Noble Fir) and we're still enjoying it, so piss off Jeff.

We were good Catholics so it was ok to leave the lights up until January 6th, but my father was a stickler to get the lights down soon after. He'd complain about anyone who left there lights up. I still hear his voice in my head whenever I see Christmas lights up well into the middle of January. I broke my ribs when my ladder collapsed while putting up Christmas lights one year. Damn if I didn't feel guilty - hearing his voice in my head - because they were still up at the end of January.

Yeah, Epiphany. How did you grow up in such a Catholic state and not know about this?
