You know, usually these two hit the mark. They have a keen understanding of the business and the craft. That's why I am so surprised that they are giving this much praise to this movie.
Let me get this straight: we're supposed to forgive the film's generally terrible acting, flawed, choppy screenplay, cliched situations, and pointless ending (not to mention a horrendously misguided marketing campaign) simply because it's "Clint being Clint"??? This film deserves award consideration because Clint reprises the same schtick he has doled out for forty years???
Gimme a break. This film would barely pass as a network movie of the week. And I expect people like these two to be able to call it properly.
Ray, are you really that surprised? Some of our best critics have been deluded by groupthink (and an unhealthy Clint devotion to begin with) into liking this, so why not these two fools?
I truly can't understand how somebody can like this film. It has a couple of good lines, but the story is trite and boring, and it features some of the worst acting I've ever seen in a major Hollywood release.
I just wish it was a tenth as good as its poster.

I love how this film is striking a chord with audiences, has gotten very favorable reviews overall, and everyone on THIS blog hates the shit out of it.
I can't wait to see it this weekend.
I just want to see Clint punking some people and kicking some ass. What's wrong with that?
@ actionman - You want to see Clint kick some ass? Then go watch UNFORGIVEN. He doesn't do anything of the sort in this movie, no matter what the trailers promise you. Seriously.
You can tell that the wife didn't really care for it, so it doesn't really qualify as a rave from the two, even if the husband was on board. (And he said that it should be viewed as a comedy.)

I wonder how many Lorenzos are left in the Academy who liked it as much as he did?

I've seen Unforgiven, Ray. About 10 times. I love Eastwood as an actor and as a director. So, I suspect I will very much enjoy his latest.

You are completely and totally out of luck. You see more of that in The Bridges of Madison County than in Gran Torino.
