Caroline Kennedy was pretty awful with her shyness and sagging shoulders and "you knows" and whatnot. But New York's just-appointed U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand isn't that great either. She has a kind of yappy suburban-soccer-mom voice, she speaks in banal bromides, she's short and she looks like the wife of a rural Austrian baker. I don't feel any charisma, and I sense nothing in the way of intellectual force or serious Bella Abzug-styled backbone. And she's clearly proud of her 100 rating from the NRA.

She's not even close to a political animal that is required to get New York state the goods.
then again it's not like she'll be battling Dick Cheney for the last roll in the buffet line

Worst of all Jeff, she's in the middle of her first term as Representative, and apparently she's pretty conservative for a Democrat, which makes the choice all the more puzzling.

Over half of those appointed to complete a term are defeated attempting to be elected. Her conservative leanings might have served her in that district, but it will kill her statewide.
The state party now has the next 9 months to start shaking the trees for fresh blood. Expect Obama's machine to get involved at some point, this a big test for them.

The way this whole thing has been handled has been such a trainwreck on all sides...Gillibrand and Patterson will both be returning to the minor leagues where they belong in November 2010.
Kennedy made a complete fool out of herself and so did Patterson.
I rarely criticize our host, and think his different physical observations are funny when they are about movie stars and stuff, but it seems tacky to call this woman chubby. Just bad manners. Probably a little old-fashioned of me since I wouldn't mind if it was a guy, but I just cringed a bit when I read that.

"Jimmy Stewart for governor, Ronald Reagan for best friend." - Jack Warner (Wells' soul-mate)
Let's look at all the hopefuls, Wells-style:
Brian Higgins (Buffalo Mick), Jerrold Nadler (obese New York Jew), Carolyn McCarthy (old biddy), Carolyn Maloney (crazy eyes), Tom Suozzi (Long Island goombah), Andrew Cuomo (see Tom Suozzi), Nita Lowey (Yenta), Kirsten Gillibrand (chubby soccer mom).
I think I'll go with the soccer mom.
And for those of you who think she is too "conservative"(she's not), how did Al D'Amato and George Pataki get elected and reelected (and reelected)?

Thanks, Prager. Are any of you from New York? If so, do you read the papers, online or otherwise? To wit: 1) The woman just gave birth a few months back - chubbiness is part of the package; 2) She's in the middle of her *second* term; 3) She defeated the Republican machine in well-heeled Saratoga County, and is a hellacious fundraiser; 4) Cuomo wants the governorship.
Can we get back to having a collective clue now?

I thought Rahm Emanuel was one of her biggest supporters for the Senate position? Wouldn't that at least imply the support of the Obama administration? From what little I know of her and what I've read this morning I'd say she's a good pick.

So, in other words, to heck with Barbara Mikulski. And we should forget about sending Kristin Chenoweth back to Oklahoma to run for the Senate unless we can magically transform her into a six-footer. (Though it would be nice to lower her speaking, non-singing voice a bit.)
She's the senator for New York state, not New York City. And as such I think she'll be fine for two years.
I'm not 100% sold on Gillibrand, particularly on gun control, but just as winter in Los Angeles is late spring in Syracuse, conservative in New York state is reasonably liberal in most of the U.S. And as a native upstater, it was politically imperative a statewide office holder for once came from outside metro NYC, to help lobby on behalf of one of the areas most hard-hit by the recession. Manhattan doesn't need the help, yet in NYS politics, Manhattan (almost) always wins. For once, I'm glad it didn't.
