Following her double-win at the Golden Globes last Sunday (Best Actress for Rev Road plus Best Supporting Actress for The Reader), Kate Winslet being double-nominated by BAFTA yesterday has me worried. We wouldn't want to see this happen with the Oscar nominations or in the final voting. It's too much. It feels hoggish.
I understand Kate's people pushing her in both categories in order to build a storm of acclamation and critical mass, but I really think it's time to nip this one in the bud. She'll probably win the Best Actress trophy for Rev Road -- highly deserved -- but that's enough. It wouldn't be cool for her to manage a double win. Most of us, I think, want to see either Doubt's Viola Davis or Vicky Cristina Barcelona's Penelope Cruz win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

Viola Davis was certainly amazing in Doubt but she didn't have enough material. Same goes with Shannon in Rev Road -- amazing work but not enough.
Winslet should win for Rev Road -- fantastic performance in a fantastic film.
I'd go with Rosemarie DeWit in Rachel Gettign Married. Now that was a terrific "supporting" performance.

I don't think this could happen at the Oscars (double nomination in the Lead Actress category). I thought they combine votes for Leads. Seems like that's what happened with Leonardo DiCaprio with The Departed and Blood Diamond.
I remember the 70s (ahhh ... the 70s) when Diane Keaton broke out big time with Looking for Mr Goodbar and Annie Hall. She ended up being nominated (and winning) for Annie Hall, but I seem to recall most film writers assumed the strength of the combined votes for both films pushed her into the winner's circle.

Hoggish? The woman is one of the finest actresses on the planet and has yet to receive an Oscar for anything (indeed, her Golden Globes wins were apparently her first major awards since Sense and Sensibility in 1996). Give her 10 awards. Nominate her five times in one category. I don't care. Just give Kate a fucking Oscar.

Whatever happened to the buzz for Cruz in ELEGY? She was miscast, maybe, but a stronger performance then VCB...

Maybe it's because of my non-religious upbringing, but I am not getting the love for Viola Davis specifically or Doubt in general. My wife and I were watching our screener, and as soon as Ms. Davis showed up, I commented "Okay, here is THE SCENE." It came, it went and we were both just sitting wondering what the big deal was. Was her performance supposed to be so awesome because she didn't overplay it? Sure, it's nice she didn't break into hysterics, but the scene didn't really resolve anything in the story itself. Sister Aloysius still had no proof as to what she was accusing Father Flynn of, and Mrs. Miller's revelation about her son didn't specifically mean Father Flynn did anything inappropriate. The scene with Mrs. Miller would have been far more effective if it actually changed anything, but it didn't. But then, the resolution was pretty weak in and of itself.

I would've given Helen Hunt's Oscar to Julie Christie that year for Afterglow, but then I'm a major juliehead.
I acknowledge Winslet's chops, but personally she's too actressy for me to love. Really hated her "I'm an ACTRESS!" AmEx commercial (actually the whole campaign sucked, magnifying the neuroses of all the participants). Kate seems to be at her best when cast as a drama queen, like Heavenly Creatures. I can't bring myself to go see The Reader based on the commercial alone. The way she says "No ... No!!!!" is almost as annoying as "I want MY son back!!!!!!!"

Well, that's one place where the Academy Awards can actually do some good. The more Oscars Winslet gets, the less chance her career of great performances will be summed up as, "hey, it's the girl from 'Titanic'!". Heck, that might even be one of the reasons she wants an Oscar so bad.

Nice, Josh. Very clever. Despite what Wells says about most of us wanting to see Davis or Cruz (who doesn't even give a very good performance, IMHO) win, I'm "all in" for Marisa as supporting actress this year, baby!
Hoping for Winslet as Actress, Rourke as Actor (dunno...it's gonna be tight). Ledger's Supporting Actor win seems all but sewn up at this point, doesn't it? I mean I know the nominations aren't even out yet, but c'mon.

P.S. Roberts has surprised me with the ease in which she's entered middle age without much fuss or antics. I look forward to her later work to see if she has the chops to be a character actress. I think she was trying in Charlie Wilson's War.

Raygo, Laura Linney probably should've won an Oscar for The House of Mirth, but she wasn't even nominated in the supporting category that year. (Talk about your "fucking cunts" ... who knew Linney could play a villainess with such conviction? That sweet smile of hers can also send shivers down your spine.) While I preferred Linney in You Can Count on Me that year over Roberts in Brockovich, Gillian Anderson mopped the floor with both of them in House of Mirth. That she wasn't even nominated proved, once again, how goddamn phony and pathetic the Oscars really are.

Uh, no. I couldn't disagree more.
Roberts should be so lucky to work with a real filmmaker like Soderbergh. The directors she normally works with are studio pushovers at worst or old journeymen at best.
I've never really seen her "champion" anything she's starred in ("Full Frontal" included), let alone talk seriously about a film she's in for more than a minute at a time.
When has she ever tried to reimagine herself? "Mary Reilly" is about the only thing that comes to mind. That didn't really work out for her, so she's been back to the ol' reliable rom-coms and older glam girl parts. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Blunt criticism (of which there's not enough of these days, IMHO) is part of the acting game...you get paid $15 million for a part, some people may not like it. Tough.
The aging naturally comment is barely worth addressing. My grandma ages naturally. Julia Roberts? After her daily spa treatment of manicure, pedicure, facial, hair salon, etc (not to mention the fact that she has assistants to do any sort of laborious everyday task that may be encountered)? Not so much.

The Oscar nomination ballot deadline has already passed, so it's a bit late to "nip this" at this point.
Also, all of the arguing about which movie Winslet should win for is the reason she'll likely win for both this year. A big enough block of voters will vote for her in one category, and a big enough block of voters will vote for her in another category, that when combined with the voters who really want to see her win and thus pick her in both categories, will be enough to make it happen.
