God, the Oscars suck. Have we reached the point the Globes have more respectability?
What a weak, weak year. It would have been the perfect time for the Oscars to think outside of their mundane box, but instead it was utterly predictable. Oh, except they guaranteed their lowest ratings ever by not recognizing The Dark Knight.
The nominees for Amy Adams and RDJ make me very happy, too bad neither has a prayer (get it, Doubt...prayer?) of winning
I was kinda surprised at all the love for Frost/Nixon, thought that one had been pretty much counted out (save for Langella). I was going to see that 2 weeks ago but I ended up seeing Doubt instead.
Ugh. I don't think I'll watch. At least I say that now. Fuck it. I probably won't. I liked all 5 movies at the very least, but it's not even remotely interesting without The Dark Knight to root for. I'm sorry. I think Slumdog wins, unless the Academy really loves The Reader that much.
Where's the two noms for Kate?! Then again, maybe she's guaranteed a win now. We'll see...well some will. I need to make plans to be as far away from a TV as possible.
tommysunshine, you make no sense. Surprised you'd show yourself again. You ever go some place and just totally embarrass yourself, and everyone is staring at you? That's here, every time you speak. And it's not your politics, just that you're so inane.
As for the Oscar nods, Richard Jenkins and Melissa Leo do not quite make up for the disrespect to THE DARK KNIGHT, but I can't forgive the snubbing of Bruuuuuce.
It was better than Rambo...In Bruges is alright but I really don't get the enormous cult-love for that movie. The Dark Knight not getting a nod is hardly surprising...I still think it gets very messy towards the last 40 minutes and it really is built of Joker's performance. Everyone else is decent including the script, but it got a nod for cinematography and Heath so I think it is getting appreciated for the best it had to offer.
Your tragedy Burma is that you're convinced that in a former life someone told you that the world would take notice at what you say and do.
So for instance when you talk of The Dark Knight being dissrespected and Richard Jenkins being nominated, I'm sure you're thinking, "Chris Nolan was having a bad morning but he'll be pleased that I've stuck up for him" or "In my capacity as Burma the baker, I've just supplied the icing on Richard Jenkins' cake."
Delusions are hard to shake off but nevertheless in the spirit of goodwill I wish you the best.
I don't understand that Tommysunshine. Why would someone have told him that in a former life? Why not this life?
Did they tell him a former life that the world would take notice in this life? Or did they tell him in a former life that the world would take notice in the next life?
It's a head scratcher... and correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldn't your politics render the whole notion of multiple lives as unlikely?
Former life, bents 75, since I do not believe- and I have zero evidence for this notion- that Burma Shave currently resides in the land of the living. The 'thoughts' of this unoriginal pseudo-Uncle Fester are posted for him by the phantom of predictability.
As for my politics I'm not a rabid, axe-wielding neo-con. I do believe however that Bush was better than his father, Carter and Bill Clinton. Is that so controversial?
And there you have it: if Massey can't watch a movie over and over again (for masturbation purposes) then said movie is not worthy of an Oscar Best Picture nom.

"Jonah: So I take it you liked Poseidon '06, too? "
First of all, never saw it.
Second, what does Poseidon have to do with Benjamin Button being better than Rambo, The Wrestler, and In Bruges?
The answer? Not a God Damned thing. Just another smokescreen set up by the dumbest guy in these parts, DZ.
Of those four films, I think The Wrestler is the best. I like Buttons as much, maybe more, than In Bruges. Rambo was a piece of shit. Even for an action movie, it was a piece of shit.
DZ, I take it that means you like The Outlaw Josey Wales.
Actually, I brought up Poseidon, because it's as much of a hackneyed cash-in as 'Button. As for Rambo, I'm sorry it couldn't meet the high-caliber, in-your-face action of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Haven't seen Josey Wales, though. The trailer makes me think it's a remake of Death Wish.
"Actually, I brought up Poseidon, because it's as much of a hackneyed cash-in as 'Button."
So, a remake of a bad '70's movie is the same thing as an original (based on a short story) epic? If you believe that, I feel sorry for you. Cash in? A three hour long epic with little action or thrills? Yeah, those always break the bank.
"As for Rambo, I'm sorry it couldn't meet the high-caliber, in-your-face action of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. "
So you're a Rambo fan. That explains so much about your lowest common denominator tastes. I didn't like Mr. and Mrs. SMith either, but it least it was trying. Rambo was a third sequel in a dead franchise that didn't even pretend to have a real story. Just blowing people up real good.
"Haven't seen Josey Wales, though. The trailer makes me think it's a remake of Death Wish. ""
Actually, I brought up Josey because it made as much sense as you bringing up the boat movie.

The short story's original, but the adaptation is not.

They did in Cameron and Jackson's case...
"So you're a Rambo fan. That explains so much about your lowest common denominator tastes."
Dunno if I'm a fan, but I liked at least the new one. And don't talk about the quality of my tastes while praising a Forrest Gump remake.
"Rambo was a third sequel in a dead franchise that didn't even pretend to have a real story. Just blowing people up real good."
You are aware of what Rambo is about, right? If you want a "story" with little action, you can always sit through Death Proof again.
