Blart In Your Face

Was Armed and Dangerous a mall-cop movie? No, but it was close enough. Can we go so far as to call mall-cop movies a comedic genre ? And does the curious success of Paul Blart, Mall Cop mean that audiences will feel just a little mall-copped out when Observe and Report opens wide in April? However you slice it, this Seth Rogen-Anna Faris comedy looks triple-quadruple coarse.

Rogen doesn't have to be Green Hornet thin (a physical state that he's probably trashing with a high-caloric vengeance now that that Hornet has gone south) but I do have a slight problem with the guy when he's too fat, as he clearly is in this red-band trailer. And I know mall cops are supposed to look dorky, but I don't care for that Curly-in-the-Three Stooges tennis-ball haircut either. That Pineapple Express/Knocked Up look is what works.

I think the majority of 20-somthings into Rogen's shtick don't even know what/whoPaul Blart is, that such a movie even exists, let alone made $100 million recently. And they don't know anyone else familiar with Paul Blart. So i wouldn't worry about it.

Does Scorsese get money for this trailer, btw?

Looks fucking deranged and hysterical. I loved The Foot Fist Way so I will watch anything that Jody Hill directs. And it looks like McBride has a cameo in this sucker. Looks unapologetically mean, lewd, and offensive. I highly doubt that the same audience that has turned Blart into a hit will be checking this flick out when it opens.

And Wells -- the fat, white-trashy vibe that Rogen gives off in this trailer is the same sort of thing that McBride pulled in Foot Fist Way. Have you seen that little gem?

A&D is an 80s classic. That spit take Levy does is one of the greatest.

I don't know. It looks an awful lot to me like "What if Paul Blart was really Travis Bickle inside?" If they go the whole nine yards and he goes fully postal in the last reel, I guess this could be okay. But the trailer itself didn't do anything for me.

This is a completely different animal than Blart and I'd worry about anyone who can't discern that difference straight away! Rogen looks like he's got free reign with his cruel streak here and I like it, he's had flashes of it in the PE and especially Knocked Up and the more the better I say.

Yeah any way you slice it that's one of the crazier trailers I've seen in awhile. It looks bold for Rogen. And yeah, TRAVIS BICKLE: MALL COP is entirely apt.

I am glad I am old and will die soon. I still can not believe the descent into hell movies are taking. At least we can be thankful it is not a teen coming of age cycle movie like they made in the 80's. Before I die, I hope someones finds a print of Convention City.

But wasn't that considered a descent into hell in its (pre-Code) era?

I was almost afraid to watch that, based on Jeff's description, but that is some funny stuff, especially since I saw Taxi Driver again this weekend on cable.

I heard that most of the audiences who went to see Paul Blart are teenyboppers and kids not old enough to watch a R rated film.

I wouldn't compare "Observe and Report" with Paul Blart. this movie actually looks like it could be brilliant for a comedy, while Paul Blart is just... stupid.

I get the sense Jeff will never be able to post something about Rogen without mentioning the weight.

Dude rocked the Jewfro and now he's rocking the gold chain/turtleneck look. what's not to like?

Liotta's looking good, btw. I just watched Narc and forgot he's not actually that big or old looking...

Yeah Liotta's looks are so unstable, but he's looking very fresh in that.

God, that's like comparing River's Edge and She's All That. I mean, they're both about high schoolers!

What Jeff actually meant to write was, "a physical state that he's probably trashing with a high-caloric vengeance...I HOPE."

Seriously, Jeff, you are one of the most self-loathing cats I have ever read. What I can't figure out is whether or not you're actually aware of it or not.

It's not enough that you resent Rogan for his success as a actor/writer/producer. But, due once again to your bizarre body image obsessions, you actively root for him to bloat up again to his old, unhealthy proportions. I guess that way you'll feel justified in directing all that schadenfreude his way.

Maybe the real issue, is that now Rogan's lost the weight, your attraction to him has become overwhelming. I can relate. He was adorable as a schlub, but now that he's transformed himself, well, I think Woody Allen said it best.

"Beneath his black-rimmed glasses was the coiled sexual power of a jungle cat."
