I'm Not There

It's not surprising to hear that Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience will clean up with a possibly $30 million (we all knew it was at least going to do Hannah Montana-level business). And learning that Slumdog Millionaire may take in a possible $9.5 million and thereby crack $110 million domestic is not exactly heart-stopping. But a decent summary of what may happen numerically has nonetheless been tapped out by Big Hollywood's Steve Mason.

yeah, the Jonas Brothers are REALLLYYYYY popular, yuck. At least back in the 90s when we had "boy bands" like Hanson, they didn't make any annoying 3-D movie... arrgghhh.

What's interesting all this is how Coraline's sleeper progress (#3 to #3 to #2) is likely going to be prematurely arreted by losing 3D screens. I wonder if it will come back after all the teens have caught Jonas et al in their first two or three weeks of engagement. None of the summer 3D animated movies (Up, Ice Age, Monsters v. Aliens) are due anytime soon.

the theaters near me that are playing Coraline in 3D still have it on the 3D sked this weekend, even with Jonas playing in 3D as well.

Like a midget at a urinal, I was going to have stay on my toes.

But seriously, the first three films in this series, and the original tv show, are some of the funniest things ever. Loved it all. So silly but so damn funny.

In light of the previous article about Ted Baehr, can I just say that I enjoy reading Steve Mason 'cause he really knows his stuff, but i wish I didn't have to go to Big Hollywood to do so -- I feel like I need a shower afterwards just from peripherally reading the ads and blurbs on the side of the page. Sheesh, those folks are crazy.

I live about an hour south of Chicago were the local theater that typically charges $9 (!) for a 3-D presentation of a movie is actually charging $15 for the Jonas Brothers.

Is this happening elsewhere? Charging 1 1/2 times the normal admission for this movie?

actionman, might I guess you live in LA? In my experiences on the Midwest/Great Lakes/Fresh Coast, most multiplexes in medium-large cities only have one digital auditorium. (F'rinstance, here in Madison, there are three 10+ plexes, and two of them have 1 digital screen.)

RE: The Jonas Brothers. . . I've never heard a song by them (but obviously I've heard OF them), but I will say this: they were pretty good appearing in their SNL skits with Alec Baldwin. All three of them looked like they actually bothered to learn their lines and delivered them as opposed to (the great) Baldwin who, like the great Christopher Walken, apparently no longer bothers with such things when there are cue cards present.

I'll cut the kids some slack with that kind of dedication.

I've only seen the Jonas brothers perform a few times, at a football halftime, the Grammy's and somewhere else... they are consistently horrible. Their vocals are rarely in key and they would be lost with out their band of session musicians. They seem like nice kids, I don't want to demean their success, but I don't understand the appeal.

And say what you will about Hanson, those boys have some serious chops and don't have any problems in the vocal department. Incidentally, the lead Hanson singer just started a new band with James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins) and Bun E. Carlos (Cheap Trick).

How come no one's mentioned the $15 ticket price? (At least around here that's the going rate.) That oughta shock some parents who are being dragged by their kids.

Yes, that's correct. It's the same thing many theaters did for "Hannah Montana 3D" a year ago, and why that movie's opening weekend gross was so much higher than expected... they charged anywhere between $10-20 per ticket. And worse: at the Bridge in Los Angeles (admittedly a high-end theater), they didn't have matinee or children's prices. Hopefully that wasn't the norm, but you never know.

(I don't know what percentage of theaters raised their prices like that; I figured it was a choice made by individual theaters, or maybe the chains themselves... but now that it's being done again, I think it may be a Disney mandate.)

Well, you can always boycott this flick for Chun Li, but for me, one misguided Street Fighter II adaptation is enough.
