Shocker

Last night Slumdog Millionaire's Danny Boyle won the Directors Guild of America for best director of 2008. I don't want to go out on a limb, but the industry seems (stressing that word) to have arrived at a consensus winner. Congrats to Boyle and to the Fox Searchlight team for a brilliant marketing job.

I was 35,000 feet in the air when Boyle's win was announced. I should have caught this in the plane and re-posted straight away but my battery gave out. The airlines all need to offer power outlets to each and every passenger -- not just business and first-class.

Note: I chose "Shocker" for a headline before seeing the same on MCN. I'll stand my ground, won't back down.

So, it's to be Slumdog, Boyle, Winslet, Ledger, Penn or Rourke, and Cruz or Davis. Just what we need, another nearly suspense-free Oscar ceremony.

The very thing that robs the Oscars of suspense is the months of pre-awards prognosticating and scores of honors leading up to the Oscars. The ceremony itself continues to offer up at least one big surprise most years. "Slumdog" seems a cinch for pic and director, but several of the acting categories are still interesting (and I, for one, don't think that Winslet has it in the bag).

American Airlines has DC outlets under the seats even in coach. They just aren't really advertised and it is unclear where they actually are, but the two shitty planes I was just on, both had signs saying such.

There will be surprises in the acting categories...I am picking Streep over Winslet, for one...the only sure bet is Ledger...Best Actor is s 3 way, and Langella could swoop in here...and supporting actress is anybody's guess...

A Langella is surprise is certainly possible. Rourke and Penn could cancel each other out...

Another Moonstruck sweep for Shanley? Adapted Screenplay, Streep for Actress, Davis or Adams for Supporting?

I don't see the Oscars being suspense-free because of the Supporting Actress category. I have no idea who's going to win or who even is the favorite. With the possible exception of Tomei (who most likely won't win because she already has an Oscar to her name), all the actresses in the category have a really good shot at winning.

I'm rooting for Tomei; Slumdog is a slam dunk.

Question to the board: Why haven't teenagers picked up on Slumdog? It's a teen love story (part of it), you would think the two stars would be on the cover of teen magazines, teen shows, and that the teens would be flocking to Slumdog.

"Question to the board: Why haven't teenagers picked up on Slumdog?"

It's because the screenplay wasn't written by an ex-stripper. Honest-to-blog.

Because it's impossible to read subtitles while you're reading text messages.
