The 2009 Oscars will happen two weeks later than last year -- on Sunday, March 7, 2010 rather than Sunday, February 21, 2010. So that's two more weeks of Oscar advertising. This is a one-time delay to avoid coinciding with the Winter Olympics, which will go from 2.12 through 2.18. So why are they staging the Oscars two and a half weeks later? Why not just a week later, or Sunday, February 28? The '08 Oscar show aired on Sunday, February 22.

Does this mean February "sweeps" have been extended into March? I can't imagine ABC would cheat themselves out of that sort of sweeps-month boost.

Specialty films, ie indies, studio boutique films, foreign language, etc had a supportive market environment when the Oscars happened at the end of March. That business has been suffering the damage of their date change ever since it happened years ago. Who cares? Just those of us who know what the term "critic-driven" means. It's about awards, kudos, praise, buzz, word of mouth starting in late fall and running through March, so films can get traction and monetize their positive awards season publicity because they can never compete with the behemoth studio marketing budgets the rest of the year. This is good news but it would be better if it was end of March like it was before.
